| Stupid question regarding supplement ingredient Megan had a low positive to rice on her allergy tests but I need a supplement for their home cooked diet and I was looking at Missing Link Well Blend but it contains rice bran. I know that foods in different forms do different things...that's probably not explained right but...since she had a LP to rice would she have a reaction to rice bran or is it different in their system in this form? |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Since bran is milled from the grain itself (whether from the rice, oats etc), I'd be really cautious - especially bc Megan's system is really fighting for balance right now...you wouldn't want to give her anything that could cause even a small change to her already vulnerable immune system. However, for confirmation...maybe ask your Vet Derm's tech to ask the Vet Derm. Or, if working w/ your general vet, your general vet could call for a quick phone consult w/ a vet derm. I'm not a big fan of Missing Link bc it has flax (another iffy thing for allergy dogs), barley, bran, nuts --- which all could be sensitive for Megan right now. Are you planning to homecook for a good while? If yes, then I'd definitely consult a Vet Nutritionist for specific supplementation - it can be really tricky and delicate for an allergy dog...and if she gets out of balance, she could develop even more allergies. This is a good one: https://secure.balanceit.com/ I do like this general supplement...but again, it'd be so helpful to get a professional opinion: Nature's Farmacy - Store - Product Details

| Thank you. I didn't realize the flax could be a problem for her. The vet we see is a traditional vet who also pracitices Holistic medicine with accupuncture, chiropractic and nutrition along with natural supplements. However, I have found a different one who is only about an hour away from me so I may get an appointment with her for a consult. I fear that I may never find the 'perfect' diet/supplements for her with her allergies. I would love for her to have an allergy free life controlled by diet and supplements but that may not be possible if I can't find the right combination. She is doing great on her home cooked food right now as far as the food allergies go and I did start her on the prednisone so the seasonal allergies are also under control...she hasn't been scratching for 3 full days now I don't want her to face a lifelong routine of prednisone though. I still want to check into Darwin's and Stella & Chewy's. I talked with one person at Darwin's last night but it seemed pretty expensive...not sure about Stella & Chewy's. Quote:

I know what you mean about the pred...but maybe it's only temporary until you figure out the right combo (not easy, believe me...I know). And/or, maybe it's only seasonal for her; ie, where you only have to give it 3mths out of the year or something. Temaril P has both anti-hist and steroid in it...but if your current med is working so nicely...I dunno if I'd change a thing .

| I would not use that supplement. I have a highly allergi dog and we use balance It now for several years with no issues. As for the allergy testing to food itself, it's unreliable so I wouldn't put any stock into the results.

Determination is good, but hopefully you can figure it out before you continue to feed an unbalanced diet to your dog. Good luck.

| I meant it in a good and positive sense but if you want to construe it negatively, then so be it. I answer all your threads most of the time and think I offer help but if you think otherwise what can I say. Maybe I'll just keep all my good info and experience to myself instead.
