In need of a good weight loss dog food... i recently switched from Blue Buffalo to Innova for my furbutts and omg just weight them and they all are packing on way to much weight...seems like 3 out of the 5 has gain between 1.5-2.5 lbs in the last 2 months since being on Innova...now am looking for a healthy weight dog food to switch them over too. Currently am only feeding 1/4 cup daily to each of them and still the weight is packing on. Any suggestions? |
Exercise! hehe. Which version of Innova are you feeding? They do have a low fat variety. |
the regular small breed (red meat) one.... |
Blue Buffalo puts out a light or diet food. THats what I have my little fattys on. |
I would definitely suggest more exercise. I feed my two a shot glass (it's my measuring cup) twice a day and they get several walks/week and at least 3 trips to the dog park to run off their energy. If they are gaining that much, I would say it's lack of exercise, especially if it's happening to three of them... |

Wellness makes a Healthy Weight. It has weight loss and maintenance recommendations on the bag. I am trying to get weight off of Cozy (needs to loss 6 pounds) and Lucy (should loss 2.5 pounds), too. They should be 10 and 7 pounds respectfully. They packed on the weight mostly when Zoey was sick. They are not tolerating their diets well 1/4 cup of food daily including all treats except a few green beans- They cry and stand by where the doggie treats are. They will walk if you make them but start to give you dirty looks after a few minutes. I upped their excerise from 2.5 miles to 5 miles daily- Same as Buddy, my energetic Golden, and Roxy- Broken up into 2.5 in the AM and 2.5 in the PM. Cozy and Lucy are beat- They look for food and sleep at home- No play from them. Cozy seems like she lost some weight- Looks thinner but Lucy has not lost anything. They get weighted in a few weeks. Roxy gained 1.5 pounds but has since lost it (she would steal to eat Zoey's kidney food- High fat and carbs in addition to her own food). If the other Yorkies fussed I gave them food. |
i was looking online and came across Wellness SuperMix 5 or something like that for weight control and that was also another one i am debating on...either that or try the innova low fat version |
They have 2 Wellness Small Breed - Healthy Weight - Small Breed and Wellness Complete Health® Super5Mix® Healthy Weight - Regular- My vet said this 1 for mine since Cozy needs to loss 6 pounds- Lower in fat and protein so they can still get little extras like chicken and veggies. |
My dad's dog is on a weight loss schedule now and he still has 5 lbs to lose. He is feeding him MediCal Calorie Control from the vet. Have you looked at the Acana Light and Fit? We were going to switch Jackson into that one but we ended up keeping him on the one we know is working for him. I prefer Acana over the vet food and if it was up to me, that is what he would be getting. |

Personally - I'd stay away from Wellness - some of their foods are made by Diamond and one of their foods is already on the latest recall list, so be very careful about any of Diamond's foods!!! |

I ended up switching Cozy and Lucy onto the FROMM sooner than planned. I kept finding the Wellness Container open a little but it did not seem like food was missing. One night I caught the cats and dogs having a Wellness party. I should have known something was going on because everyone was getting a long too well. Roxy is getting 1/2 cup, Cozy 1/4 cup, and Lucy 1/4 cup of kibble each with 1/2 tablespoon of Honest Kitchen Thrive as a topper for breakfast. For dinner each yorkie gets 1/4 cup of veggies (homemade & finely chopped or SOJOs or Preference) Fills them up :) Cozy and Lucy each get pinky sized piece of dehydrated chicken (homemade) as treat at bedtime. Cozy is 14 pounds now down from 16 pounds and Lucy is now 9 pounds down from 9.5 pounds :). So what I am doing it is working :) The kibble container has books on top of it so no more break ins :) |
