What to expect for recovery for neuter My puppy is almost 7 months. I wonder what to expect when I have him neutered. For example, what is the recovery like? Can we go back to our normal routine, or does he need special care? Should I work from home for a day or two? Does he need medications given or anything else special? He lost 5 baby teeth last week. Should I expect more to come out over the next month or so? Can he be neutered now? He is small. He was 2.75 lbs. at 4.5 months. I'm not sure what he weighs now because my scale weighs in .5 lb. increments. That's not helpful with a tiny puppy! Any information would be greatly appreciated! |
My one dog was fixed at about 5 pounds I think, he was hard to keep down, like nothing happened. My other guy moped around for days. I don't think he was in pain just liked the extra extra attention. My last guy a rescue was 2 years old and about3.5 pounds he also had I think 12 baby teeth pulled, he wasnt well taken care of for the first two years, he was in more pain with the teeth than the neuter, he came home with pain meds and an abx for the teeth, none of mine ever tried to get at the incision. I think most vets will pull the baby teeth if any left in when they neuter. I think in general neuter is pretty easy for the boys. |
Some boys will bounce right back and want to go straight into their usual routine. It is important to keep them quiet as possible the first 24 hours and first few days to avoid harming the surgical sight. Max required pain meds the first night. He quickly figured out he could not jump. I followed doctors' instructions not to resume long walks for 10 days, and no baths for 2 weeks. |
Jax was groggy for the first day, and by the next day acted like nothing had happened. It was hard to keep him from jumping and running around. My vet gave me pain meds for him but he didn't seem to need them. If he's 7 months I would go ahead and neuter him now because he will start learning to mark soon if he hasn't already, and it's a nightmare to stop that behavior once it starts. |
Corky was loopy, had the runs. For some reason drank a lot of water. The next day he was fine.. |
