| Heartguard chewables?! My vet gave my pup, Jack, who is 2lb 2 oz, a heartguard chewable for me to give to him..This thing is pretty big for his size and I had to break it into tiny pieces so he could actually chew it up good and swallow it..Problem is, he would only eat half, and that was after some serious trying! Is it ok to give him half now and half later on in the day? He absolutely will not eat the other half for anything right now..what do you guys suggest I do?

| It would be best to call your vet or call menial. I wouldnt trust it. I'd just use the regular heartgard pills or interceptor/sentinel and just pill him.

| They gave me the same thing at my Vet when Jimmy was about 4 months old. It's still sitting on my shelf, he's 7 months now. I'll wait till he is a little older and after his next vet visit and vet advice to give it to him. I've never given any of my animals heartworm medicine though so it's going to be a stretch! Let me know how your pup feels.

| So you guys would advise to not give him the chewables at all and switch to interceptor or something in a pill form next time? I am gonna call the vet to ask what to do about the other half. Thanks for the quick replies and advice!

| My vet has Gracie on Sentinel - it's a little pill but she won't swallow it. I crush it and mix it with a teeny bit of yogurt that she'll lick off the spoon (that way I know she got it all). Check with your vet to see if that's an option. |

| Sasha loves taking her Heartguard chewable. She thinks it's a treat and gets really excited when she gets it on the 1st of every month. I don't remember what age I started her on it though but I've never had an issue with her not eating it. |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I had to coax Joey with the pill, but he loves the chewables, you're right, it is pretty large, but I give it to him during the afternoon, before his evening meal and I know he's hungry. I cut it into 3 or 4 pieces and he acts like it's the best treat ever. My little foster boy gobbles his down as well, but your little guy is so small, it would be a whole meal to him!

| My Coby thinks they are a treat. I always just pull one out on the 1st of every month, and say, "Cookie!"--he comes running like nobody's business! He eve takes it and hides under the kitchen table to eat it. (That's what he does when he gets his animal cracker as treats for poo-poo's outside!) It does take him a minute to eat it, he doesn't gulp it all down at once, but he does love it. Maybe you could smear a little Peanut Butter on the outside, and that may be even more entising! Good Luck!!! |

| I talked to the vet and he said as long as the tablet is taken in one day, it's not an issue. Next month, I will get the pill, it would be much easier lol

It's on that site. The one with ivermectin only and no pyrantel. When I used it it was more like a pill than a chewable. Could call and ask.
