| Spoon of Honey Hi. We just got our first yorkie, her name is Chuie and we are in love. A few days after we got her, her energy tanked. The lady we brought her from suggested a dime size of honey be administered. We let her lick it and she perked right up. Now, my question is, she would incorporate this into her daily diet, 2 to 3 times a week, or only when she is lethargic? |

YT Graphic Artist Donating Member | Honey is ok, but I prefer to use Nutrical for hypoglycemic episodes (which this sounds like). Since it sounds like you have a puppy, you need to make sure that she is eating enough, and don't wake her up to play if she is sleeping. Puppies need to rest and a small yorkie could get lethargic very fast from too much play. I would limit playtime to 10-20 minutes at first. You should only give the honey or Nutrical if she seems lethargic, as giving it to her all the time may make her dependant on it or even raise her sugar levels. | Thanks for the replies. She is 2 months old. We love her so much and just want her to be happy. I will keep an extra sharp eye on her energy levels. We did take her to our vet. She told us that she was constipated. Once she cleared the blockage, I told her about Chuie's Energy level and the honey and my vet just asked....Did it work? I told her yes, and that was the extent of the conversation. So that is why I wanted to know what the norm is? She goes back in 3 weeks, so I guess I will have a better gauge by then. At the moment she is playing with our 8 month old Japanese Chin, so I guess her energy is fine. |

| Being a diabetic with sugars all over the place, I am interested in this stuff, so I read a bit on hypoglycemia in dogs.. check it out for yourself.. Dog Hypoglycemia (Low Blood Sugar): Symptoms, Treatment, and Prevention Has your vet done any fasting bloodwork ? Handy tool to diagnose with.

| This is common in puppies under the age of 12 weeks old. As yours is only 8 weeks old, you will need to keep an eye on her for at least another month. This is one reason it is recommended that Yorkie pups are kept with their Mom and littermates until 12 weeks old. I don't agree with giving honey, as it's not pasteurized and is not recommended for human infants in their first year. Pancake syrup in a pinch, if Nutrical is not available. Also be sure to feed some protein (puppy food is fine) after giving the syrup or Nutrical. A puppy that young may not stop playing to eat, drink, or nap. You will have to be diligent and be sure that she takes naps, eats and drinks (meals X 4 at her age plus snacks) at intervals throughout the day. Do not let her play to exhaustion! Getting her on a feeding schedule will help. IMHO: Sorry, but I am not impressed with your vet's response.... maybe a new vet that is more experienced with small dogs, esp Yorkies, would be a good thing....

| I was just going to point out the same as kjc. Honey is not recommended for puppies. "Honey should never be served to babies or puppies. There may be botulism spores in the honey that can effect the youngest of our "children." Older animals and humans have immune systems strong enough to tolerate it. Honey is fine for your adult dogs, just don't give it to puppies."

| I concur that honey should not be given to puppies. I also would just generally not give it to a dog.

| Thanks guys. I appreciate the reply. I like the pancake syrup in a pinch, but I will get her the nutrical today. Our vet is at Petsmart. We signed up for the Wellness plan they have, so I think the vet changes with each day. We took her in a few days ago and had one vet then today when I dropped off my Chin to get neutered it was another vet. So I will take note of the different methods and replies. We adore her soooo much. If only I had known yorkies were so loyal, fun and adorable, we would have adopted one years ago. |
