Coccidia ?? Hey All, I posted a thread before about my pup being healthy...I spoke to soon. The Vet called and told me he has coccidia. He said it is not life threating and gave me an anitbiotic for Buster. He asked me if his stool was runny and I told him no..it never was. He said that it is commen in pups that were kept in kennels/pet stores. Just wondering if anyone has ever heard of this before ? |
Yep and your vet is right! Dogs can also pick it up at Dog Parks and walking on the sidewalks if another dog had it and pooped on the street. The meds will fix him up just fine. |
Villette can give you great information on coccidia. One of her babies had it as a pup as did one of mine. After the treatment by the vet, they go on to be normal. It is nothing to get worried about as long as you've begun treatment. Villette wasn't as lucky though. Her pup was extremely sick before she was diagnosed. She could have lost her sweet baby -- thank goodness she found out what was causing her symptoms and was treated accordingly. Lisa |
Cali also had this. When I first got her the bredder told me they had given her a 5day treatment of Albon? and not to let the vet put her back on the medicine that the coccidia was already treated by them. So when I tiik her for her first visit the stool sample showed coccidia and they gave me more Albon, I called the nreeder and she said not to give it to her so I didn't, Cali never showed any signs of it her stools were fine. So I had to rush her to the er vet a week later and told them that I wasn't giving her the medicine and they told me start it asap. Well they put it in a report to my vet that I wasn't giving her the med on the advice of the breeder and my vet brought it up the next visit. It was kind of embarrassing but two stool samples after that were negative. I think my vet said that the coccidia can be a stress on their system so it's better to treat it. |
Miko also had coccidia whenever we got him...He was very lethargic and would barely eat, so we took him to the vet and they identified that he had coccidia. It was a very serious case and we had to keep him on albon for almost a month before it went away, and Miko almost died because of this in combination with hypoglycemia. Although some cases are not life threatening, others are, so be very careful and make sure he's eating enough because the coccidia take all the nutrients from your baby and can make him very sick. |
My friend's dog got coccidia and died. IT was sad because nobody even really knew that had that. She just died. |
Dollar had it when we first got him but he was cleared of is as of his last vet appointment about a week ago...WHOOHOO |
Oh Good! He seems to be fine..still his energetic self. His next appt is 12/17 so hopefully it will be gone :) |
