| Acepromazine The vet gave me Acepromazine to give Buster for an upcoming ten hour car trip. Buster is five pounds (give or take). He cut the 10mg pill into eights and suggested that I start with 1/8 and increase to another 1/8 if needed. I gave him 1/8 of the tablet almost three hours ago. He is awake off and on (as is everyone else in the house). He doesn't look like he's in any distress or having any trouble breathing. For some reason I thought Acepromazine would knock him out completely. Articles that i have read online indicate this as well. Has anyone given this to their dog? Is this the reaction I should expect?

| My daughter used to fly wth her 5 lb male quite often, and they gave this to her to calm him down. I think she started with 1/8 or a 1/4 of a tablet and always had to give more...unfortunately, I don't think she ever saw much of a difference in his anxiety level and she hated giving him the meds so she stopped. I think each dog responds differently. I know some larger dogs respond very well to just a small amount, while some smaller dogs need more. I would just be careful and adjust slowly. Quote:

| My Mom's Vet told her to get dramine and give to lacy for her trip. She weigh's 6.5 pounds. She gave 1/2 pill. She was just fine. It does not knock them out it just make them more relaxed for the trip. If he get car sick it will also help also You might ask the vet if dramamine would be ok you can just pick it up at the drug store. Linda, Sassy and Patti |

| When I have used it, my pups were very groggy and out of it; but they would wake easily and walk around.

| I agree with Ladyjane. It is intended to take the nervous edge off, but not knock them out completely. By that, I mean they may be more relaxed so they will settle down and rest easier, ride without nervousness, but should still respond when stimulated, when their name is called or when they hear something, when your vehicle stops, etc. If it were my dog, I would not double up on the 1/8 tablet. But that's me.

| It did seem to take the "edge" off a little bit. He still tried to get out of his car seat and he "screamed" for a while when I took him on a short trip earlier to see how he would he respond. The vet did say I could try dramamine as well. I'm afraid the dramamine won't work at all and I don't want to mix drugs. I'm starting to wonder if I should just hold him for 10 hours. But, he hates the windshield wipers and if they are turned on, he goes absolutely crazy.

| Did you give the second dose that the vet suggested? If not, that is what I would do.

| No. I was scared to give the first dose. How long should I give the first dose to work before I give the second dose? I didn't think to ask the vet that question.

| I would think it is ok or he would not have suggested it. I honestly don't know the regular dosage for it. If it has been over 3 hours now, I am sure it is ok. I would think after an hour it would have been ok to repeat it Keep in mind that I am only saying that because your vet said it was ok to give a second dose.

| You can find the dosage amount here: Acepromazine: Pet Anxiety Medication for Dogs & Cats - 1800PetMeds It says this: The usual dose for dogs and cats is 0.25-1 mg/lb.

| Thanks Linda! I probably won't "experiment" any more this week-end. The prescription says 1/8 - 1/4 tab every 8 hours. I've heard that you need to be very careful with this drug and I didn't want to give too much. I don't leave until Thursday so I still have time to check his reaction. I don't want him "knocked out". Just relaxed enough that he can ride in his carseat without going crazy.

| Well, what I will tell you is that with the proper dose they look pretty loopy and they go to sleep. But, they DO function if you wake them up. It was a life safer for my Sassy when I traveled a lot..she would get colitis from the stress. And, yes, you do have to be careful with it!

Donating YT 30K Club Member | My vet gave me nutricalm (holistic)for Pixie's storm anxiety and it has worked really well along with the thundershirt. Maybe you could ask your vet for something like that.
