Gross, Fleas?! So I feel like I am a horrible momma... I have noticed Couver has been itchy, and yesterday noticed a flea on Couver and some scabs that I assumed were flea bites. I took him into the vet today, and the vet confirmed... yes, we have fleas. I was about 10 days late for their monthly flea/tick treatment of Frontline, and well... here we are! I bought some Sentry shampoo for fleas and ticks today and treated them with First Shield. They have now been bathed and treated again... I'm going to be vacuuming our house like crazy hoping to get rid of any and all fleas in our house. Anyone have any advice on how to get rid of these buggers? I never thought my dogs would get fleas :( |
Don't beat yourself up, you are a wonderful mommy. Fleas can happen in a heartbeat, but you got it under control now...and right away I must say.:) I've not had a flea problem in the house and you reacted so quickly, you may not have a problem. I do believe there is a powder you can get for your carpets. Others will problem has some good ideas soon. |
Poor Couver! Don't beat yourself up. I haven't dealt with fleas (not yet), but I have read here about vacuuming like crazy, every nook and cranny. Keep vacuuming for awhile because I think they lay eggs that hatch later and that is what makes them difficult to combat. Hope Couver gets some fast relief with the shampoo and med. |
Sadie is 6yrs and Lillie is 5....between the 2 of them I think they MAY have had 3 fleas in their life time. We have been camping all week in the woods, I use peppermint oil mixed with water (1 c water 20 drops peppermint oil). I spray a paper towel until very wet. Wipe them down starting at their head, under legs, belly, neck, chest, back....all over...they haven't had 1 flea on them! They were very young when they got some on them. My Mom got this recipe from a holistic vet in Ma. They smell good...it's natural and when their hair dries it's very soft...only thing...has to be applied every couple of days....worth it to me! |
2 Attachment(s) Thanks for the advice everyone... I will definitely be going on a cleaning spree tomorrow. Unfortunately, we have almost all wood floors, so I don't know how much help the vacuum will be. As of right now, Khloe seems to be unaffected by the fleas. We have two cats, and it looks like at least one of them is covered :( I removed 8 fleas (and killed them!) from Tiger, and gave him a bath in Dawn dish soap. I also treated them both a few days ago with some type of cat flea/tick medication, but it must not be working? Ugh... This is so gross. I'm hoping we get this cleared up ASAP!! In the meantime, here are some pictures of my flea infested crew... They both look so innocent, you would never guess that they are covered in evil bugs! lol |
Don't forget to immediately toss out the bag if you have a bagged vacuum. Otherwise those little critters can just climb right back out. |
I would steam the carpet before vacuuming. The high temp should kill the fleas and their eggs. |
We have had an issue this year and we never have before. We use Frontline but it doesn't seem to be doing its job. We just treated the yard so really hoping that helps. :( It just freaks me out! |
Your infested crew is adorable. :) Use a dry swiffer to pick up dust on your hardwoods, and vacuum along baseboards and in corners, and underneath everything. Vacuum furniture and drapes. Wash everything that is washable. Hopefully you did catch it early, so you are ahead of the game. I worked in an office with a woman who was a cat hoarder and her house had a terrible flea infestation. She was carrying the fleas into the office on her clothes and purse. Vacuum and clean every nook and cranny. |
Your flea infested crew sure are little cuties!!! :D:D Good luck on getting rid of them. Sounds like you are on the right path. My MIL says to put out white bowls of water and they will jump into it. I have seen her do this and yes there really were fleas in the water.:eek: It wouldn't hurt to try it! Ha ha. Don't blame me if it don't work. She swears by it! |

Lol I guess my MIL isn't crazy after all. :D:rolleyes:;) |
I will definitely be trying the white bowls of water tonight. It makes sense to put light above them. I guess we will see :) I have spent the entire day cleaning... I have washed our sheets, all dog/cat beds, vacuumed the rugs, vacuumed the couch, swept, mopped, and all of the animals have been checked several times today for fleas. I found a couple more fleas last night on Tiger, but so far... no more on Couver and none on the other two (Khloe and Beau). Hopefully we will wittle them down and they will go away. Well, I'm going to get back to cleaning... I'm hoping these buggers figure out they are not welcome :p |
