| Diarrhea - He won't eat the pumpkin Been having a diarrhea problem with my 1 1/2 year old boy and went on the chicken and rice yesterday. Still trying to figure out what set it off this time. Stools are still very soft so I thought I would try the pumpkin. He hates the pumpkin and will not eat the mix. He actually grunts just like the kids did when they didn't like something. Is there something else I can add that will help his unhappy tummy? Thanks for your help.

| He's worse. Could the food change be the culprit? Thanks for the fruit suggestions I'll give it a try. Last night he got up two times once to pee and then a poo and had a yellow vomit once. I"m taking him to the vet today with a stool sample just in case. I'm also wondering if it is the food change. On May 5 we began changing his food from Innova small bites to Orijen Chicken, Turkey, and Wildfish dry food. Do you think it's the Orijen? Now that he is on chicken and rice how do I get him back on dry food? Do I just go back to the Innova? I changed from Innova because he just was not thrilled with it and I had to use a wet food topper to get him to eat it. Thanks for your help.

| Happy your taking him to the vet, just to be sure. What ever dry food you put him on , just slowly mix the chicken and rice with his dry food and slowly decrease the amount of chix , rice . Mine however is a stinker and I still have to mix chicken and rice with her food 2 years later LOL

Ahh, the poop wars lol. I'm going through the same thing right now. I started Alice on Verus when I got her and she didn't really like it. Switched to Orijen, she ate it for a few days then refused to. I switched again and now I'm having to do a little "food trial" with her to see what gives her loose stools vs. what she can handle but also likes. So far I've narrowed it down to -beef gives her really loose stools, even diarrhea, and grains seem to really bulk up her stool where she goes like 5 times a day and it's super soft. I'm using chicken, rice and pumpkin (she loves the pumpkin, so I'm not sure what to tell you there other than open her mouth and stick in in there with your finger) and then I give a bit of the food with it for 2 meals and see how she does. If she's good, then check, it's on the list and she can have that flavor. (I'm sticking all within the same brand btw.) I ruled out anything besides the food with two stool checks at the vet and an exam and she's otherwise perfectly fine. So, if everything at the vet checks out normal, you may have to do something like that - give the chick/rice until poops are good, then slowly incorperate some of the food and see what happens, if the loose stools come back - scratch that food, go back to chick/rice for a day or two then try something different. Think about the ingredients (mainly the protien source and how much grains if any and what ones)more so than the brand. Alice is doing fine as far as being willing to eat the dog food even though she had the chicken/rice. She loves the brand I'm using though (Nature's Variety), just trying to figure out which formula/protien source she'll do best on. One thing I've definatly learned on YT is that these little babies can have sensative tummies and what works great for one dog may not work at all for another and sometimes it takes a bit of trial and error to figure it out. (p.s. - the vet wasn't any help in figuring out what food to use, they just wanted to stick her on a SD rx diet, which when it's just a food sensativity issue, there are much better options). Good luck at the vet

| Deuce Update + dry food question Went to the Vet today. Took a poop sample and will get the results by Wed. She put him on metronidazole 1/2 tablet 2x's per day based on a previous problem we had in November. I gave him his first dose at 3:00 and by 5:00 he was a new man. Wanting to play ball, talking for attention and now sleeping on his favorite pillow on top of the ottoman. He ate a round of Chicken and rice at about 4:30 and we haven't had an diarrhea yet. This is looking promising. Looking forward to sleeping through the night I hope. The vet thought it may be that Orijen is too high in protein and fat for him looking at the timeline of the problem. I tend to agree. I'm going to get him back on the Innova and add some chicken/or broth to the evening meal to entice him to eat. I'll eventually back off the enticement. The Vet said the Royal Canin Yorshire Terrier formula may be an option. Anyone out there using that? Thanks for all your comments. It's great to know we're all going through the same thing.

| He's back to being my little boy He's dong great today after two doses of the Metronidazole. Hate to sound like a bad mommy but "Drugs are good". It was the same when the kids were little. He is ravenous today and has been playing and eating well. Still on chicken and rice 4 times per day (small amount) and I put in about a teaspoon of the dry dog food for the supper meal He ate it all. No poop yet so we're waiting for that one. We'll just stay on the Innova and make it work.

| Glad to hear your little one is doing better. The diet change is likely the cause. Going from Innova to Orijen is a big change. Feeding too much of the Orijen may also have contributed to loose stools (common problem with overfeeding). He would need a lot less Orijen than he was eating of Innova. (pay no attention to feeding guidelines on food bags...they recommend too much) Sometimes a food just doesn't work for a dog. I tried Acana, the lower protein brand made by the same manufacturer of Orijen, and it simply did not work for Max. He dried out and was constipated.

| I think the food change also. You said it was higher in protein? That's probably what caused it. I changed Uni's food to a lamb based one (she likes lamb) and got sick, it was too rich for her blood. When I took her to the vet they did a stool sample, found no parasites, felt no obstruction in the intestines, so he suggested bloodwork, and her bloodwork came back as mild pancreatitis. Maybe if this happens again (after a food chance) have his bloodwork done so they can see what happened. I ended up switching to Honest Kitchen Preference (meatless and you add your own fresh cooked meat). She loved this now, and I switch up between whitefish and chicken. I think the texture and warmth (you mix it with warm water) gets them to eat better. It's something you may want to try out. The Preference has the lowest fat and protein % with the Verve (beef) the next lowest. They are made with human grade ingredients then dehydrated.

| Thanks for your replies Thanks for your replies and sharing your experiences. Deuce is doing much better. He had a good BM today that looks to be on the way to normal. I will begin adding the dry dog food (Innova) to the chick and rice. Thanks again.
