K9 Advantix Dosage

I need to order some since this is what we use for the summers here (Frontline is not strong enough for MD ticks, apparently, so we only use that in the winter, and Advantix in the warm months).

I am wondering... do you think it would *not* work on Jackson if I got the "for dogs up to 10lbs" one. He fluctuates between 15-16lbs.

Whenever I get the 11-20lb one, it just seems like SO much unnecessary stuff that I am leaking onto his back. Sometimes it just seems like overkill.

Any help appreciated.

I just went to my vet for annual and shots. I bought the advantix because thats the only thing that works on the lyme ticks out here. I wanted to get the up to 10lbs for them to share the box. Lily is only like 5 lbs and Levi was 11.5 or so. I was told to get the next dose up for Levi and Lily can use the under 10 pounds. My vet said I could dab the dose down the backbone because both of my two look like oil slicks for days later after the application. I did see one tick on both of them...both dead, so far so good. Hope this helps.

I used the under 10 pounds on my 12 pounders without them getting fleas/ticks. But, we don't live in an area with all that many ticks to begin with.

I'd probably attempt it, but then again, he does seem to fit nicely into the next category up, so with that in mind, you might want to stick with it... I would be more willing to try the smaller does if Lyme wasn't a concern.

I definitely would put it in between the shoulders (which I assume you do) and not down the back. It's way too easy to lick if it's further down. For an 11 or 12 pound dog, I'd be going with the smaller dose most likely.

For Mickey who is 6 lbs I use 1/2 the 0-10 pd dog dose in the winter months here.
Then in spring (now) I give him the who dose for dogs up to 10 lb.
Since he is only 1 1/2 this is only the second winter I did/tried this. It worked well.
Before it was because he was a puppy and still growing.
Max is 7 1/2 pounds and he always gets the full dose.

The ticks are so bad here in MD I would give him the full dose if it were me.

I understand the concern and I feel the same way. However, at 15/16lbs I'd say he needs to be at the 11-20lb dose, especially if you want the full effectiveness. If he were 11/12lbs, I'd say he could probably go down to the 10lb dose.

Since Jackson had Lyme Dis. once already I would put him in the dose he is suppose to have. He fall right smack in the middle
We also live in an area where there are ticks like crazy in the spring and fall.. So I understand.

I agree ,you should go with the one for his size since he's right in the middle of it. If he was only like 11 or 12 lbs. you could maybe get away with the lower one. There's really not a big difference in the amount between those two anyway, better safe than sorry.

What about splitting the application? 1/2 of the vial today and the rest tomorrow? I wouldn't mess around with the dosage as you want to make sure that Jackson is getting the proper dose. I used to use K9 and it seemed very oily and it would run down Max's hair. I would split it into 2 applications, and it worked better as far as the mess.

Princess Izzy made a good point, since Jackson had Lyme's its better to stick with suggested dosage. Also, you guys spend a lot of time outdoors.

understand your concerns but getting lyme disease is way worse than a little extra medicine. my sisters dog just got dx with lyme yesterday & he was in so much pain in his joints. go with the recommended dose, my vet also told me @ last visit that tics are terrible in our area & she is seeing a lot of problems. also talk to your vet about the LYME VACCINE if you haven't already. obviously you love your pup prevention is the way to go. i have had luck on 1-800- petmeds, prices seem better than retail & vet. goodluck

Crystal, yep, I am putting it on his shoulder blades. It just always seems like SOOO much, lol.

I am just going to stick with the 11-20lb dose. Anyone know the difference between the Advantix and the Advantix II?

Jackson had Lymes last year. His symptom was limping on his back leg so he experienced joint pain. It was taken care of really easily with a 30 day antibiotic and 7 days of pain meds. He was back to himself within a day of meds, actually. I think I was lucky since I caught it so early. He tested negative for lymes this year thankfully and I have been keeping up with the flea/tick meds.

I'm probably going to order from entirelypets, or see what Petsmart's prices are like.

Advantage is imidacloprid for adult fleas. Not the best at stopping their lifecycle.

Advantage II is imidacloprid for adult fleas and another ingredient for their eggs and larvae.

Advantix is imidacloprid for fleas and permethrin for ticks.

Advantage II wouldn't work for Jackson.

Ohh, now I see they came out with an actual Advantix II.
That is something for adults, something for eggs/larvae, and something for ticks. It's Advantix with the added insect growth regulator to better stop the lifecycle of fleas. If he isn't having a flea problem, there is probably no reason for the extra drug.
