Senior Yorkie Talker | Butrenorphine for pain until surgery on 7/11/11?? Has anyone used Butrenorphine for pain for three months? Princess Chloe is scheduled for surgery on July 11, 2011 and she's on butrenorphine 0.01ml every 12hrs. She is scheduled for a re-check with her neuro-vet in May and I was just wondering if anyone has given this pain medication for this amount of time to their furbabies? I've check it out on the internet, and seems to be safe but it makes no reference to the lenght of time this pain med. can be given. Many thanks in advance for your comments. Naomi & Princess Chloe |

| We've used it, but not for 3 months. I can understand why you would be nervous, but I'd be giving it knowing that your pup's quality of life is better this way. I would say you could probably go with Tramadol, but then I think your pup wouldn't take it? So just go with what works for her...

Senior Yorkie Talker | Princess Chloe's has AAI a congenital condition, she turns 8 months old tomorrow, we purchased her from a breeder when she was 5 months old, she is 3lbs and her bones are not fully developed. The neuro vet. want to wait until they are fully developed. The next opening for surgery at UC Davis Medical Veterinary Teaching Hospital is on July 11, 2011 and the surgery will be performed by a qualified certified NeuroSurgeon at the Hospital not a student. On March 10th she started crying out in pain and after Xrays and two neuro consultations it was discovered that she had the above condition. They put her on Tramadol, I will never waste my money on this medication again, for small animals it is terrible and has a real bitter after taste which many small animals. Even after putting in melted velveta cheese, peanut butter, wraped in small pieces of bread covered with whatever, the animal still detects the bitterness. Many people on this site have agreed that Tramadol is not for small animals. Now she's on Butrenorphine which Princess Chloe is taking with no problem. It seems to be working so I'll just make sure to ask the vet. next month to do a blood test to check her liver and kidneys and place it all in God's hands. Thanks for your replies! | I don't think we've ever used it. I think my dogs are usually prescribed metacam. I'm not sure what came with Lily's last surgery though. I know she had a fentanyl patch but she also had some kind of liquid pain med too. |

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | Thanks for the explanation. Same reason my vet wanted to wait till Tallulah is a year old to do her spay surgery -- he has been reading that surgeries for any reason in early months of a dog's life can interfere with physical development. I know that other people, including excellent vets, disagree but it makes sense to me. I hope the Butrenorphine works for Princess Chloe. It's so awful when our pets have even minor pain and we can't help them. You're lucky to be close to UC Davis - I wish we had a vet school down here in So Cal. |
