Yorkie teeth question Hello all, I have a 1yr old yorkie she is 3lbs and I have just noticed that she has two sets of canine teeth on the bottom. I assume these have to come out ? I am just worried about putting her to sleep. has anyone else had this problem ? any advice ? THANKS ! |
Yes,, since she is a year and they haven't come it, it's definitely time to talk to the vet about removing them. This is extremely common in small breeds. They are usually removed at the time of spay/neuter. |
Hi there. My little guy had the same thing. At 8 months old he had 11 teeth extracted. I, too, was very concerned about putting him under anesthesia. I read enough to worry. My little guy is 2.7 lbs and when the assistant first looked at him, she said "Oh no, the vet will not put any dog under 3 lbs under anesthesia". So that scared the sh*t out of me, for sure. But when the vet came in she reassured me and went over the procedure as to what exactly they do and what exactly they are to use. So I felt at ease. When I picked him up at the end of the day - honestly - he acted as though nothing had happened to him. Make sure that they do bloodwork first!!! And.....if you are thinking of having her spayed, this would be the time to do it. Good luck! |
Thanks for the info.. like you I have read so much online about putting them to sleep that it makes you scared to take them to the vet. |
Two thoughts: 1) Make sure you have pre-op blood work done on her. Your vet should be recommending this to help to uncover if your pup has certain medical conditions that could put her at risk. 2) Ensure your vet is experienced with anesthetic for small breeds The downside of not have the teeth removed is the potential for serious gum infections and problems that will be both costly for you and painful for her. If your current vet does not give you a high degree of confidence find a new one to have her baby teeth removed (which BTW I understand is not as "significant" as pulling an adult tooth) |
