| Orijen - how often to feed Hello- I just started my 8 month old yorkie on Orijen puppy food. I had previously free fed him Eukanuba. My question is how many times a day to feed and how much to feed a 5lb. 8 ounce puppy? Also, I have been feeding her Bil-Jac dog treats which I just found out are not the greatest. Any suggestions for a better dog treat? |

| By 8 months, he should be fine with 2 meals a day, but since he is used to being free-fed, give him 3 meals a day at first. He will probably let you know how often he wants to eat. You can slowly start cutting back to 2 meals until he is a year old. I feed my adults twice a day because I feel that going 24 hours between meals is a bit much. They get half of their daily ration per meal. For Orijen, you should feed 3/4 - 1 1/4 cups for dogs between 1 - 10lbs. Start him out with one and a quarter cup per day and see how he does. If he puts on weight, be sure that he stays within the healthy range. If he picks up too much, cut back on the food. I can't really help you with the treats question: I try to make their treats myself so that I can know what is in there. Or I use fresh fruits and vegetables. My dogs love apples, nartjies, oranges, carrots, berries, etc. Just remember that grapes are not safe for your dog! Hope that helps!

Izzy is 7.6 lbs.. She gets about 1/4 cup every day but she also gets 1.5 nuggets of Primal raw in the morning... If she was only eating orijin dry then she would get about 1/2 cup... We free feed the Orijin BUT i don't refill her bowl just because she emptied it. It takes her all day to finish it.. I just refill it in the morning

| Haha, Britster. Very cute Aren't little sisters the best? LOL To answer your question, BabyGirl Rosie, I make several types of treats. I even make kong filling myself (liver & oats). How does your yorkie feel about cheese? My dogs love cheese, so I spoil them with it from time to time. Not too much though - it can lead to pancreatitis. Here is the recipe for cheese bites: 1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour 1 1/4 cups grated cheddar cheese 125g margarine or 125ml oil 1 clove garlic - crushed 1 pinch salt 1/4 cup milk (or as needed) Grate cheese into a bowl and leave until it reaches room temperature. Cream the cheese with the softened margarine, garlic, salt and flour. Add enough milk to form into a ball. Chill for 30 minutes. Roll onto floured board and cut into shapes. Bake at 190 degrees celsius for 15 minutes or until slightly brown and firm. This recipe makes 2 to 3 dozen, depending on how big your shapes are (if you give a lot of treats, make them as small as possible). I have healthier recipes too, loads of them. Let me know if you need more

| I have been feeding my 8 month old Orijen since Friday and now I am wondering if this is too much protein for her. Does anyone have any advise? I have noticed her drinking more water and urinating more often. I've read some of the other posts about too much protein being bad. |

| Too much protein isn't supposed to be bad for your Yorkie, but if she has a liver problem, then the high levels of protein will make her ill. Dogs should get very high protein levels in their food: they are carnivores and aren't able to digest grains. They need protein for energy, building muscles and maintaining body form. Basically, protein is the most important food group that your Yorkie should get and the levels should be high, with no grains. Orijen is a great food (one of the absolute best) and I don't think you can go wrong with it. Just make sure that your puppy doesn't have a liver problem (have the vet do a bile acid test and blood tests). Try to give the puppy's digestive system some time to get used to the new food and after about two weeks, you will see whether you need a change or not. If the puppy doesn't do well on Orijen, you might want to try Acana which has lower levels of protein.

| If you choose to not bake your own treats I would like to recommend any treat from "Three Dog Bakery". These treats are healthy and baked and you should be able to find them at your local Walmart. If you can't find them locally their web site is "http://threedog.com/" so just cut and paste to go to their site. Good Luck |
