☺Farrah☺ Donating Member | Hip Dysplasia... I wonder if any of you know how old a dog (yorkie in this case) must be to truly know if there is hip dysplasia. Of course the breeder and the vet disagree.

| My Mylee just had FHO surgery for Hip Displasia. I started noticing signs at 4 months old, she was officially diagnosed at her spay surgery when they did x-rays at 5 1/2 months old. She had her surgery when she was 11 months old.

| Wow! I did not even realize hip dysplasia was an issue in small dogs. Thanks for posting.

Donating YT 10K Club Member | Do you mean legg-calve-perthes? It's affects the hips more commonly in small breeds than hip dysplasia. It also generally occurs before a year old. Legg-Calve-Perthes disease

| Hmmm, I know I asked my vet several times if he was sure Mylee's case was not actually Legg Perthes, and he said no, it is clearly HD. I had two different vets look at the x-rays and they both agreed. She was a long ways away from two years old at the time. If you google HD, there is a lot of supporting research to show that puppies can present early with HD. The breeder does not want to accept responsibility that's all.

| I would trust a vet over your breeder. Legg perthes is more common but usually on one side but does go on both. Diagnosis is usually before 12 months for Leggs but can be as late as 14 months where HD is any age. But OFA is not done until after age 2 to certify them clear...not to diagnose. I hope your breeder has spayed and neutered her dogs and informed the owners of any offspring...are the parents OFA certified??

So to answer your question, she denied responsibility and claimed that more offspring would have these health problems if it were genetic. Pure denial.

| That is not true....The offspring will all carry for it if it is on both sides like your pup had. It is recessive and needs to be on both sides however it is in many lines out there and when it rears its ugly head the parents should not be bred together again and the breeder ethically should be notifying others of this issue IMHO. That is how lines get tainted and it keeps on going and getting in many lines and ends up with puppy mills who mass produce these issues. Does not sound like a well respected breeder in my opinion. I say get the proof, have an ortho vet write it out, check on your states puppy lemon laws, and then hit the breeder with the bill. Legally this breeder is responsible for some financial piece of this babies surgery...once again my opinion...but check the laws

Purchasers have 14 days to document that the animal has a contagious or infectious disease. It also provides only 14 days to document a congenital or hereditary defect -- much less than the six months or one year provided by most other large states. New York also provides no penalty for dealers who fail to deliver advertised registration papers (although consumers could sue the dealer in Small Claims Court anyway, charging breech of contract. Read more: New York Pet Lemon Law Sad and now wonder what I can do to change these laws. Something to chew on for a while. $2,000 for the pup and another $850 for the LPD surgery...incentive enough.
