| Skin problem/staph I know this is probably the wrong place to post but I'm hoping for wide response. Frankie has skin bumps, itching and staph. This has been going on for months. He started with clavimox and steroids. We got him off the steroids quickly. He went on clavimox and antihistamines. Nothing. Now he's on baytril and antihistamines. I give him oatmeal baths. Changed his food to health extension. I feel helpless. Any ideas??? I don't think meds are the answer but he needs to clear this staph. Oh, and he doesn't go outside in grass. Please help.

| try asking in the health forum. Sorry I can't be of any help, I haven't had this problem. Also it is Saturday so many members may be doing something for the weekend.

Yorkie Yakker | I have had the same problem! I am looking to learn to take a more hollistic approach. Kaylee died about 2 months ago at the age of 5. She had skin problems and the vets couldn't tell me why. They just gave her more drugs. I think the many combos of drugs Kaylee was on ended up being responsible for her death

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Does he have allergies? Is this what caused the staph to unfold? For staph, most vet derms will use Simplicef x 1 month. Are there other symptoms (any whatsoever)? Bc w/ recurrent staph...there is always something else going on which, in turn, allows the staph infection to occur in the first place.

| what food was he on and is the health extension a chicken formula; he might be allergic to something in the food; some dogs are allergic to chicken.

| Yes, he has allergies. We aren't sure what he's allergic to. My vet suspects they are seasonal and that our area has some nasty pollens still around. He said 1 our if 3 dogs coming in are having problems with allergies. It's still very warm here. He said we can start to rule out seasonal when we get a frost to kill the pollen. He had the allergy when he was on red meat and fish Origen. I really don't like all this med stuff but there isn't much to do until the staph clears.

| Lady has chronic skin staph infections due to her weak immune system (diabetes). Medication will only work for awhile, but the staph will come back as soon as we stop it or she becomes resistant. Since all dogs naturally carry staph on their skin, topicals work best for us. I use a benzoyl peroxide shampoo and benzoyl peroxide cream (Clearasil!) on the lesions. I have recently tried colloidal silver which amazing results. I put it in a little spray bottle. Natural Remedies & Treatment for a Staph Infection in a Dog | eHow.com |

| My little Lola also has recurring staph infections. I have taken her to a dermatologist and they have put her on antibiotics and a special shampoo. I think what has helped her the most is the shampoo that they put her on. I bathe her twice weekly and leave it in for 10 minutes before rinsing. I use only cool water and it seems to keep her clear. It is a prescription shampoo - Max Chlorhexidine 4 Shampoo. Good luck! Last edited by Lolasmom1211; 09-22-2010 at 05:42 AM. |

| Thanks all. I will talk to my vet about the prescriptions you mentioned. I am hoping it is just an allergy to something we can put our fingers on. My concern is that there is an underlying problem. Are allergies symptomatic for bigger underlying health issues?

| My dermatologist told us it is probably something we will have to deal with from now on. She said it will be better at times, but will have "flare-ups"...we are on a 3 week course of antibiotics now, but I think the shampoo helps more. |
