Limping Puppy My puppy of 5 months was in a cast for 15 days last August because I accidentally stepped on his paws. (My mistake which I hated myself for). He had two broken bones on his left paw. The cast was taken off last August 25 and after it was taken off he was limping a little as he was used to the cast. After 2 or 3 days he was back to normal. Today as he was running and I did not notice what had happened he is limping again. Is it a sprain or a muscle pull. I used a ice pack on his leg and massaged it gently. The vet is off during the week end. Does anyone have any experience on a similar situation of a pull, sprain or over extension. What should I do. Please let me know.

Additional Information I forgot to say that when I massage his foot and leg he was not crying or yelping. If he walks he could put pressure on the leg and at times would walk on 3's. Definitely no broken bones so I thought of a sprain or extension.

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | broken bones take more then 15 days to heal, even in puppies. did the vet do an x-ray before taking the cast off? bones typically take at least 6 weeks to heal.

Limping Puppy Thank you for your message. The vet did not take an x-ray as he said the bones healed. I will go back tomorrow to the Vet.

Soph was in a cast when she was a pup and was in it for 8 weeks. Dogs heal quickly but 15 days seems way too soon to have removed the cast in my opinion. I'd say a trip back to your vet is definitely in order. Also something to keep in mind down the road....once Soph's cast came off, bone healed completely, absolutely 110% on the leg......for about a month after any time she saw us watching her run around she'd immediately slow to a walk and start limping, looking over her shoulder at us to make sure we were seeing what a poor injured little creature she was. Of course when she didn't know we were watching she would run around like a nut, no limp whatsoever
