Please help...my 5mo old yorkie/maltese mix is losing hair 3 Attachment(s) This poor baby has been through so much already. At 15 weeks, he got Parvo, despite getting all his regular shots/wormings, etc... He's now 20 weeks old, and for the past few weeks has been slowly losing hair around his neck. He has been growing, so I though maybe he was just losing his puppy fluff, which after surviving Parvo, he was looking pretty weak and pitiful anyway. Could this just be a side effect of the Parvo? Or could this be something totally different? He acts completely fine now. It took a few weeks after he got out of the hospital to regain his strength, but he's back fool force now. ;-) He's growing, but hasn't really gained that much weight. He's 3.4lbs now. But he's very active, personality is great, eats good. I think he's just going to be small. The skin and hair loss thing worries me though. Right now, it's just around his neck. His skin is a lil dry in that area too, but no sores. As you can see in the pics, it's just around his neck. Any suggestions? |
Were it a side effect from an illness or really any health related issue it wouldn't be localized to one area. My first suspicion he's scratching his neck...perhaps due to fleas or dry skin...which is causing the hair loss |
Man he's cute! My 1st question is what are you feeding? Some foods are known to make the furbutts itchy so perhaps it's that. If it's just the one area try either Aloe Vera (just the straight stuff) also you can use either hydrocortisone or triple anti biotic cream. I would call the vet & see if they can help you with a few solutions over the phone. They can at least clear up of the Parvo meds can cause hair loss. |
Have you had him checked for mites? If it were me i would have the vet take a look at the spot....good luck...:D |
Both Maltese and Yorkies are single coated breeds and do not shed. At five months, he is too young to be getting his adult coat which is a slow transition anyway w/no hair loss. Have you asked your vet about it? |
Could be caused by any number of things, but guessing won't give answers. I'd take him in for a blood panel and sking scraping. He sure is a cute little boy. |
Natural Balance Duck and Potato... Both Ziggy and Zoey are on Revolution for fleas. But Zoey (4yr old yorkie) has always had dry skin and Ziggy (5 mo old yorkie/maltese) is not starting to develop dry skin as well. Does anyone have any other suggestions for help with dry skin? |
Omegas 3/6/9 and royal jelly should help with dry skin. also make sure you really really rinse all shampoo out. Also try an oatmeal shampoo. No perfumes, and as few additives as possible. |

I was going to suggest an allergen free feed, but it looks like you already have that covered. Unless he has allergies, it is probably something that is irritating him. I'd have it checked if I were you. |
