| I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Tattoos are mainly used by commercial breeders to identify their dogs, they really have no reliable national data base. Most of the tatoos are made by the breeder and only registered with them, and they are hard to read over time. Microchips are much better in my opinion, less painful too, and you can have it done when the dog is spay/neutered.

| All of my dogs are microchipped & registered to Home Again. By law in El Paso, Texas, all dogs must be microchipped. I think it's great but the con is that it can be useless if the owner doesn't register. When I found a stray Chihuahua last year. He was microchipped but his owner did not fill in the information for me to find his home. I had to search for his owner all day & I eventually found his home. The owner did not even bother to look for him. Microchip is better than tattoo, IMO. |

| Thank you, Nancy! It was not easy to find his home, it was just few blocks away. I lost my dachshund two years ago and the search was fruitless. There were many people walking on that day & no one saw her. I think she was stolen. I was so devastated and it still bothers me with the unknown what had happened to her. Only one thing I am glad is that Shanna was spayed & whoever took her won't have puppies from her. She turned 14 years old last month. I miss her very much. Because of her, I had to help the Chih to find his home. I wouldn't hesitate to do it again. ![]() I was very pleased when the city passed the microchip law. We have problem with lost & roaming dogs in El Paso. OP: What a great decision you made! Please register with your information. The waiting stinks but the day will come! |

| I have been thinking about microchipping Dharma but I have a few questions. If (God forbid) Dharma got lost...and someone were to find her, how would they know she is microchipped? Also, what is the ballpark price range for this procedure? I know there is no price for protection I just want to be prepared money wise. As always thank you for your help!!

Levi's microchip (resQ) came with a tag explaining that he was microchipped. I put it on his ID collar with his other tags. It explains that he is microchipped and how to return him home. Also, shelters and veterinarians know to look for microchips as a first response when a pet is found and brought in...even if there is no outside evidence of a microchip (like an ID tag). So I would hope that someone who found my lost pet would take him in instead of selfishly keeping him. Levi's microchip was between $40-$50 including registration at the vet. My brother's dog has the exact same brand of microchip, but got it done at a rabies clinic for only $30 including registration.
