| Since my Yorkie is in a constant state of liver issues (She's 3 years old and has had 3 years of shots up until now); do you think I should hold off on vaccinating or still have the titers done? My vet did agree not to give her shots at this time because her liver enzymes are high, but I wonder for later on??? |

I have done titers for almost 5 years now in 3 dogs - 2 of which have had high titers and demi had a low titer at 1 years old so did the one year booster to be safe as she was a rescue that did not have her last series of puppy shots and vet wanted to wait for 1 year to do the shots if titers were low. Her titers were done at cornell university and cost me the most out of any titer as it was $154 for that one where as with jean they are about $50 Last edited by dwerten; 06-09-2010 at 03:02 PM.

| My 3 yorkies were due for their 1 yr boosters a month ago. I will be taking them this week to get them. Distemper and Parvo is all I want them to have. Bo had a reaction to the lepto with his last series. They already had their rabies shot a couple of months ago. Is there any other shots they need that are necessary to have? They don't go to boarding. I do most of their grooming except their nails. After this booster I won't get them any more 3 three years except rabies.

yeah i am always leery of people who use their title to explain things lol I personally prefer an explanation of why they feel this is necessary not just I am the vet and that is that lol. I usually run from those kind of people as i feel they have something to hide. People who are good at their profession can usually explain things and are open to hearing your concerns and will review what you bring them and give you a reason of why they agree or disagree and then you as the pet owner can come to a logical decision after consulting with them on what to do with your pet. Respect is earned not granted by a title and it is earned by educating pet owners on how to better care for their pets and doing the right thing to keep them healthy which means to keep educating yourself if you are a professional and not only rely on what you learned in vet school but what is evolving passed school as medicine is ever changing. I think many do not continue educating themselves after school and become complacent in their jobs so when pet owners start to ask questions they get frustrated and cannot answer it because they simply do not know the answers.

This is said very well. There may be reasons that vets have become tired of explaining things (many clients don't care or maybe they feel that that's all they'd be doing alll day), but it is their job. IMO, if they don't love people and they are too busy to have discussions, then they may be in the wrong profession... And some are just insecure with their knowledge...

Since Lexie has been feeling poorly for a couple days I opted today to take her into the vet (only the older vet was there today) and we discussed our options. Here are his thoughts - I wanted to see what you may think. He said that a biopsy would show (90% chance) whether she may CAH (or Chronic Active Hepatitis) and if it showed that, the usual form of treatment for that are steroids (most likely prednisone, I believe) and that it is very treatable if it is CAH, as opposed to MVD. Okay, this is new to me. So I will do some research on that as well; I did opt to have bloodwork done today to see how her levels are doing. Oh, also when you are treating one of your mvd dogs, what antibiotic do you prefer?? We had use Baytril on her before, but it seemed to make her a bit sick, so now are trying Metronidazole, 1/2 tab a.m. and p.m.
