Keep Can Food From Spoiling? Hi, I mostly feed my Yorkie dry food. But every once in a while I give him wet can food from this brand. Of course, 1/8th of that can is enough for one meal for a little Yorkie. The problem is that when I store the food, it always goes bad after a short period of time. I tried to put it in air tight containers and in the fridge, but still -- the same problem. Any ideas on how to keep this food from spoiling? Thanks, -mks |
I am not sure this will help with canned food but I had the same problem with pumpkin when I would use it if Missy seemed a little constipated. I hated opening a can, using a tablespoon and then ended up throwing the rest away because it went bad before she needed it again. So I remembered what I did when I use to make my own baby food when my kids were young so I tried it and it works. I put the pumpkin in icecube trays, freeze it and then put the cubes into a freezer bag and have just the right amount when I need it. And if one cube isn't enough I can use two. I don't know if it would work for canned food but might be worth a try. |

But what if you are freezing it? |
I went to the store to buy icecube trays and can food that's suitable for the trays, and ended up finding another great product for small dogs. It's like this. Basically, small servings of pet food in small pouches. It's probably good for two servings for the little Yorkie, and if I open it and the second serving spoils before I use it, I guess it's not as big a deal. I'm glad I found this and bought 24 pouches because interesting pet stuff like this are hard to come by where I live. Thanks for all the advice everyone, -mks |
I have tried food in large cans before and it seems to go bad very fast b/c Ella's small and doesn't eat that much. I now buy small cans (well it's in a little tray) and she eats it in 1 day so it doesn't sit in the fridge and go bad. Awhile back i found lids in the pet isle at Wal-Mart to help keep canned food fresh & keep the stink out of your fridge. They are very cheap and work pretty well. I do recommend buying smaller cans of food though. |

what about wellness or natural balance food as they come in the smaller cans |

His regular diet is dry food which I think is healthy. I only give him this as a treat. As long as he gets excited about it every once in awhile, it's all good, I think!! |
