| Jenny, that's what I thought, too. Go to my post #25 and click on the link to another ethoxyquin thread. When I made the statement that it was used only in foods w/fish I was corrected (see post #22 in the other thread). Apparently it's used to preserve fats in other meats as well as fish. Here's the link to the other thread. See post #22. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...ght=ETHOXYQUIN

| Ok, so it's used to preserve animal fat & by-products also. Good to know, thanks Bonny. I don't feed mine w/any of the above, but will double check the ingredients for animal fat.

| I don't think NB was alluding in any way, they don't add ethoxyquin or BHA/BHT. I was only aware that it's used in fish that's why I posed the question. Wasn't aware that it's also used in animal fat & animal by-products. I know alot of treats from the super market contain animal fat & BHA (preservative) is used to keep it from getting rancid. It's always good to read the ingredients & to know what products shouldn't be there...

In other words, NB was saying, "Look, we only use it in our fish and it gets cooked off, while these other manufacturers are much worse and add it later to other things in the kibble." I was just trying to add to your discussion above.

| We may have to go back to kibble (Ellie isn't doing well on her current diet, but she doesn't do well on dog food either ) unless her nutritionist can figure it all out for us. It is really frustrating though. I feel terrible at the thought of making her eat this crap that we call dog food. IMO, great dog foods are pretty much nonexistent. It would be nice to know if ethoxyquin is destroyed in the extrusion process, but the responses on this thread are from dog food manufacturers. There opinions are based on bias and so their reasoning about it is worthless (again imo). I think the only way to get a true answer about how much is destroyed and if it is required to be added to fish meal is to talk to an indepentent researcher, etc. The same goes for denaturant. One company says they would never use such a thing. The next company says it is required by law. So somebody may not be being very truthful. I'm not sure how many ppm is allowed in human food, but anything beyond that would be very questionable to me. Well, actually any amount is questionable to me since it is labelled poison.

I read somewhere that all kibble is 'junk' food.

All kibble probably is junk food, but I don't trust myself to understand enough about nutrition to safely home cook for my dogs. I admire people who do it successfully.

| Quick question -- why do certain dogs need grain free diets -- allergies? What kind of symptoms do they have and at what stage does this usually start? |

Princess has a yeast problem & I don't want to aggravate her skin/ear issues w/additional grains, even tho it might not affect her. IDK, it's all very fuzzy to me.
