Parvo paranoid question Hi guys! I went to work today (I work at a clothing store) and found out from the manager I worked with today that her dog has parvo. I shouldn't have to worry about being around her and bringing something home to Emmett, right? Emmett's been vaccinated... She did check me out... I bought a shirt and a belt and sunglasses... should I not let Emmett get around those? I know this may be a totally stupid question but I am super cautious and paranoid when it comes to my Emmett. |
I don't know how contagious it is. Me mayself I worry a lot and can be paranoid but I would be careful. you can google it and see how contagious it is. |

People are under the misconception that because are dogs are vaccinated (have received their full compliments of shots) that they can't get parvo. Incorrect, you pup still can. If your manager's dog has parvo, she can have brought on her clothes or shoes. The best way to insure that you don't track it in your house is leave your shoes outside, and change your clothes before picking up your pup. |

I would just be extra careful and like the other said, leave shoes outside and change your clothes. A year or so ago my dtr's best friends parents adopted a lab puppy from a shelter and my dtr was over their playing with it and the next day it got real sick and was diagnosed with Parvo, I freaked with having 3 and one is on immune supressing medicine but they were all ok. I wouldn't let her friend come over for a couple of weeks!Lol I am a little paranoid! |

I have come in the house barefoot....and then undressed in the shower...the problem is keeping them from jumping up on you. I finally started undressing in my garage. |

I just read in the AKC Gazette....a new rule affecting dog shows. One can complain and demand a vet check on any dog suspected of being not in the best condition......Always worries me when I'm at a dog show that one of my dogs will pick up something....always wiping their little feet and definately won't take them to potty in the public areas. The worst that has ever happend is that we were set up next to a larger breed dog; Tavurean Shephards....and the woman was picking fleas off it and blow drying at the same time......I was putting up a topknot on my dog and low and behold there was a flea. I always carry K9 Advantiks in my grooming bag...immediately snapped one open and applied. |

I didnt know to take my shoes off before I went in my house... however, it has been raining here for days and I stepped in lots of rain puddles... I didnt change my clothes either, but I didnt really touch my manager so I hope Emmett will be ok. :( :( :( I'm freaking out. Should I be freaking out??? |

Rain doesn't kill parvo. You need a strong disenfectant.......such as clorox... |
Well there isnt anything I can do about it now. :( When my manager told me her dog had parvo I tried to stay away from her as best as I could. She has been cleaning her own home with Clorox, so I don't think I have to worry too much. I guess I'll just have to watch Emmett to make sure her is fine. As I said, he has been receiving his vaccinations so he should be more protected than if he did not have them. |

Yes, if he has his vaccinations, he is probably ok. |
I don't want you to freak out anymore because, yes more than likely, Emmett is FINE! However, I am super super super cautious about parvo because Franklin got it about 2 weeks after we got home. We rushed him to the emergency vet and he had to spend 6 days there, costing us over $1600. Luckily he lived but it was a constant struggle of keeping him hydrated and preventing him from throwing up/having diarrhea. He had NEVER been outside and already had 2 sets of vaccinations. However, because vaccinations given before 8 weeks are basically rendered useless by the maternal antibodies, puppies aren't fully protected until after their last set of vaccinations. Like I said, Emmett is probably fine so don't lose any sleep over it. Just do make sure that you know the symptoms of parvo (lethargy, constant vomiting and diarrhea), and that you rush him to the vet if you see any of these signs because it a serious disease. |
