Plastic for food or water dish? It seems like I've read a few times that plastic should not be used for food or water dishes. Is this right? Why? My gang just got a set of plastic dishes as a gift & I'm reluctant to use them until I find out if they're safe. |
Plastic leaches the chemicals they are made out of, into the food, and also absorbs inpurities into the plastic...That's why you can still smell foods, after they've been in plastic...Stainless is the best, and aluminum is not, at all, good either (for dogs or humans).... |
From what I've read Bonny, plastic is the least favorite to be used on a pet. It holds bacteria over time, even when washed. It also holds smells. Stainless steel or ceramic is the best. Neither hold bacteria, if washed daily of course. I like ceramic but Buddy's set came with stainless steel. It always looks clean and shiny. |
Some types of plastic can break down over time and leach chemicals into the body. BPA is one of the chemicals that is linked with some adverse health effects. I personally stick with stainless steel water bowls and porcelain food bowls for my dogs and parrot. I store their kibble and treats in glass jars (made in USA glass) but I do use plastic tupperware when we travel. I tried glass tupperware but after dropping one and having to clean up the mess, I use plastic. |
I have never had plastic retain smells. I always fill up plastic with baking soda and a little vinegar and a little soapy water and let it sit for a bit and it comes out great and odor free. |
:eek::eek::eek::eek: I'm so glad I asked!! My SIL just gave us this set...I have no idea where she got it from so I can't return/exchange it. But, I'm definitely not going to use it!! I guess it's just going to be another dust collector in the attic. I've been using a SS water bowl and porcelain/ceramic for the food. I wasn't doing that intentionally but I'm happy to know I was doing right. :p Oh, I just got one of those water bottle feeders from Mimimomo and was going to try that out. My guys are always dipping their faces into the water and then wanting to kiss on my while they're dripping wet. :rolleyes: I had planned to use a plastic bottle for this, but I guess I need to look for a glass one instead? |
It really depends on the type of plastic - lots of plastic is safe to use for food or drink. The bad ones are usually like water bottles you find in the grocery - and only if you refill and reuse them. |
Plastic bowls are known to cause contact dermatitis around the nose and lips in dogs. We use glass bowls (Pyrex) for Ellie. They look nice and are made in the Us. ;) |
I just use durable ceramic type bowls. I think they are by Corel. I think they sell them everywhere and they are quite inexpensive. We we are done with them I through them in the dishwasher. I have a stainless steel dog bowl but it has this rubber ring arount the bottom, and it doesn't seem dishwasher safe. |
I've used bowls with the rubber rings around the bottom of stainless bowls and put them in the top rack of the dishwasher. I just set it to "air dry" rather than heat dry when I put anything like that in the dishwasher. |

We use glass water bowl and ceramic food bowls. I received a plastic set for Maddie from my mom. They are small and light, so I keep them in her travel bag. She only uses them a time or two a year, but they are not breakable or heavy to pack. This may be an idea for plastic bowls. |
