Do we need to feed him more? We've been feeding our yorkie a 1/3 of a cup of food at each meal (morning and evening) since he was a puppy. He will be 2 in March. We feed him Nature's Recipe. My husband thinks he is not getting enough food, as he gets anxious for his meals and starts "asking" to be fed in the afternoon around 4pm or 5pm (if my husband is home from work at that time). He eats his meals quite fast, too. I am afraid of feeding him more, as I've heard small dogs can put on weight quickly and that even an extra pound or two can be bad for them. I read something on here about adding frozen green beans into their diet. Is this a good idea? If so, do I add it to his food? Or do I give him some green beans and then the dry food? How much dry food and how much of the green beans? And lastly, do you unthaw the green beans or just give them to the dog frozen? Thanks in advance! |
How much does your Yorkie weigh? Mine are 4.7 and 4.9 pounds and only get a 1/2 cup total ALL day. It is really a matter of whether your dog is at a good weight or not, if he is thin adjust the food, if not stick with what you are doing. If the dog acts hungry you can add green beans... I usually use fresh ones that I have boiled but you can use frozen, mine would prefer them thawed but it doesnt really matter how you feed them... I just add any veggies I feed right to the kibble. |
Thanks for responding, ArmaniMan! Ours weighed in at about 7.5 lbs on his last vet visit. He's not thin by any means, but we wouldn't say he's overweight either (you can feel his ribs pretty easily). The vet didn't say a word to us about him being overweight, so I'm pretty sure he's doing okay in that department. We feed him a total of 2/3 of food per day. I read about the green beans and carrots and thought that was a great idea. We will definitely be adding those to his meals. That way he's getting more, low calorie food, instead of high in fat dry food. |
