| Couldn't spay--preop bloodwork came back with problems We were unable to do the spay today due to Sophie's preop bloodwork coming back with slightly elevated BUNs and creatine. Her BUNs were 30 and normal is between 7 - 25 and her creatine was 2.1 and normal is between 0.3 - 1.4. But he thinks shell be ok and we are checking blood again in 2 weeks and I had a sample sent off to see if we can find the cause. The vet says it might be the high protien food she's eating (orijen) causing it so he wanted us to switch food and the come back to check. So I'm on my way now to get more food. Any suggestions on food an what else I should do? |

| Natural Balance has some really low protein foods (some even in the late teens, and low 20's but that may not be necessary). But if ya wanna stick w/ grainless, Merrick's Before Grain is around 32% protein, Fromm's Surf n' Turf is around 30%, and I think Taste of the Wild is also around 30%. Nature's Variety Instinct is 35%.

| Thanks for all your suggestions and kind words! The vet is pretty sure that it is probably the food so I'm still worried but not as bad. I'm going to the hollistic/organic/"good food" store now and I'm going to talk to them about it too. I'm leaning towards Merricks right now and if I have to get some with grains it will be ok. I'll keep everyone updated on how she's doing. I will say that as far as her urinary functions are going, they seem normal so I'm hoping it is the food. |

| I've had Buddy on Natural Balance Organic and it's low in protein. About 26% I think. I forget but it is lower than most. It's a high quality kibble and I add boiled chicken and veggies to it. He's been on it for about 4yrs now. No problems. Sorry your baby didn't get spayed and hope it's only the food that causing the problem. |

| Thanks for the suggestions everyone. The lady at the food store was tons of help and after looking at almost every bag we decided on fromms salmon. It is 25% protein. Hopefully this will work! Keep us in your prayers and thoughts! |

| We feed Nature's Variety Prairie line and it is 26% protein. They have a Salmon formula.

| I'm sorry to hear about this. I don't have any input on the food but I wanted to say that I hope everything settles down. I know how much you worry getting prepared for taking in for spay only to have it delayed. Nerve wracking for sure. Hugs.

| did they check urine as well as before anesthesia i do urine and blood work and kidney issues would show up in urine too -- Was there protein in urine? I would not feed a yorkie high protein food due to issues with liver with many. Fish is good as it is a highly digestible protein so hopefully that will help and all will be ok I definitely agree it is food related as your dog is too young to have kidney issues i would think |

| Thanks again for all your kind words and thoughts. I'm awaiting the results from the blood sample we sent off. I thought they'd get it today but they didn't. Hopefully tomorrow. I'll update when I know more. Hopefully this thread may help those who may feed a higher protein. I know some can handle it, but some can't. |
