I also would like to see the research on this.

Also, what will you do when he escapes the yard in search of a mate? It really would not be worth the risk for me

If you want a good "pet", don't stud him out. He will live out the rest of his life in search of another mate, and will mark in your home. If you are just out to "make a few extra bucks" then go ahead- contribute to the 6-8 million dogs and cats that are euthanized annually in the U.S.

I really hope that you go the pet route...
Nah. You guys have set me straight. Right now the little guy is sitting next to me on the couch very happy and eating the computer. I'd like to keep him that way, except the eating the computer part.

His first vet appointment is Monday, and I will definitely talk about getting him neutered. "What do you think, Ruger?" ""

Let me step in here.

I show and breed, but my studs are not for public stud. My boys are my pets first and have no issues with marking, except when I take them into a new area. The one problem one has is once introduced to the breeding process, whenever there's female in heat, the boys lose their brains, and go off food......think of nothing else.

There is more more responsibility to being a stud owner when just putting him out to stud him for a few extra bucks. Besides all the preliminary testing that would have to be done on him. That is a costly process. There is also being responsible to conducting the breeding process. It's a hands on process. You also have the responsibility of assisting the owner of the female in the whelping, if she requires the help. As a responsible stud owner you will have to be willing to take any of the pups that can't be placed, should the owner of the female be unable to keep them. In addition you have the responsibility of taking back any pups that have been placed and returned, should the owner of the female be unable to.

Breeding yorkies is a bit more complicated than just putting two dogs together.....

Did you tell the person you got your dog from, "How dare you charge money for this dog. What kind of a horrible person are you?"

I just went to the store and spent a small fortune on this little guy. I didn't give the manager a hard time for trying to make a profit off of my dog.

He's sleeping right next to me now, and I wouldn't let anyone harm him for a million bucks. You make me sound like a terrible person and I'm not.

He's not going to be shown, and the thought of breeding him just crossed my mind. That's why I'm here asking questions. I'm new to this, and breeding him may make "him" happy but make my life miserable.
Did anyone else see this? Are you talking about you spent a fortune on STUFF for your little guy? or you spent a fortune FOR your little guy?

I hope you didn't buy him from a pet shop. You said you have decided against studding him out, that's good. Now please read on here about how all pet shops are from bybs and puppy mills. Lots of members here had bought from pet shops unknowingly, as did you, but now please know that buying that pup just continues the cycle for puppymills.

If I misunderstood then my apologies.

Anyway, I won't, but if I did pimp out my dog would I have to drive a big Cady and wear a fur coat and hat with a feather in it?

YES! That WOULD BE required. Now you have another reason to just love him.

Ruger was not purchased at a pet shop, but we bought a ton of "stuff" at the pet store a couple of days ago. My girlfriend surprised me with him -- her dog picked him out -- and she researched the hell out of this without my knowledge. He was purchased from a breeder who I found out from my "new" vet has an excellent reputation.

I trust my girlfriend on this. Her dog, a Westy, was also purchased from a good breeder. If we had the bloodlines of our dogs we'd be living like royalty.

I would love to know who this excellent breeder is. Are they located here in Colorado?

She got the dog from GP's Quality Yorkshire Terriers in Grand Junction. I know she questioned a bunch of other breeders, one wouldn't give her a dog because she already had a dog. Go figure. This one let her bring her dog with her and let him mix with the pups. As I've said, the two dogs get along extremely well.

If not... that is not a worry, but the following is:

-Constant marking in the house
-A dog whose mind is on mating, and nothing else.

Honestly, I would leave the breeding to the professionals. They are there to improve the breed.

If you want a happy, healthy, well-balanced pet- spay and neuter!

No, not age specific, but have your vet check the pups growth platelets to make sure you're not interferring with growth. Also, have him check for retained puppy teeth so you can have those removed at the same time of nueter/spay. That way you only have to have your pup put under anesthetic once. Oh! and if a boy, make sure both testicles are in place. Don't want to have to go in and have major surgery if it can be avoided.
