Bordetella I have a couple questions about the bordetella vaccine. Bailey is about 8.5 months, a little under 4 pounds, and I just took her in for the vaccine this morning (through the nose), because I want to get her groomed soon. 1) The vet said she needs another booster in 3 weeks. I had never heard this before. Is that normal? I thought one time and she was good for a year. 2) Is it common for this vaccine to make dogs sick? The vet said she might be sniffly for up to 10 days, but she threw up a lot when we got home. I *think* it was probably carsickness, because she threw up a little on the way to the vet also. But it's unusual for her because she's never been carsick before. My vet is about a 45 minue each way car trip. Thanks in advance! |
I was under the impression that the bordatella was to be given only before going to the groomers or a kennel, and you get it a few weeks beforehand. This vaccine doesn't last a full year though - I think only like 3-6 months or something. I've never heard of getting a bordatella "booster." You're just supposed to get it within a month of being kenneled or groomed or something along those lines. It's kind of like the human flu shot and I've heard of dogs actually getting kennel cough from the vaccine. |
Bordatella vac. is supposed to last six months, however my vet has been seeing some KC cases as early as 4 months after the vac. is given. I get Harley bathed at least once a month at the groomers, and when my husband is out of town on businees he goes to daycare while I am at work, and I still only vac. every 6 months and have yet to have any problems. He has only gotten the nasal vac. once and that was because they were out of the shot. Maybe if the initial dose is the nasal dose it makes a difference? Jeri and Harley Also, Harley did throw up after the one time that he got the nasal vac. I would think it would be gross and could just cause them to gag! |
Hmm, everyone seems to hear different things! The vet said bordetella lasts 13 months...but then he found out this was her first one and that's when he said she needed another in 3 weeks. But he said then after that she'll only need it every year. |
Hi. My puppy also got the intra-nasal Bordatella. I read on a site (that I thought I bookmarked, but apparently not) that it only lasts 6 months. I have a question about this vaccine as well, not trying to take over your post :p, but is it necessary if I only take my baby to the groomer's to have her nails done? She's there for all of 5 minutes and I wait to take her home with me then and there. Thanks. |

Some people do say that Bordetella is not necessary, because if you dog does get Kennel Caugh it is easily treatable with antibiotics. I know that at Harley's daycare and his groomers it is required, but I don't think it is required everywhere so I would check with your groomer for his/her regulations about this particular shot. I would think though that if there were an infected dog where you have your dogs nails clipped there would be a chance of catching it even if you are only there for a few minutes. Jeri and Harley |
My Bailey gets the bordatella shot every 6 mos- required for grooming.... |
