changed food - should I change it back? I recently changed my puppy's food from Science Diet to Blue Buffalo b/c I thought that BB was going to be better for her. I did so gradually and am now on the BB 100%. Lately she is scratching more - mostly near her ear (not an obsessive amount but I noticed it is more than before) and her poo is mushy/smelly. I asked the vet and she said it could be numerous things and not necessarily the food. We have not made any other changes so I do not know what else it could be. I know that puppies can have diarrhea while getting used to food but the scratching? I am wondering if I should change her diet back to Science Diet or if I should stick with BB a few more days and see if this is not related. I am open to opinions :) Thank you!! Ohhh, I should mention she had giardia about a month ago. She was treated and the vet said she was negative. I really hope the diarrhea is not related!! |
My Stormy would lick her paws and bite at them on Blue Buffalo. I loved the food and she really ate it well, I think it may of been some of the grains in it. When I switched to Wellness she stopped the licking her paws and any itchies. |
wellness is a fantastic food. but with that said I would wait unless your puppy is having diarrhea. if after a full bag of food she is still scratching I would switch. http://kona.kontera.com/javascript/l...rey_loader.gif |
thank you for your response. Since you had the same experience I was confident it was the new food. I have since changed her back to Science Diet. I know some people do not think it is the healthiest but she is doing better already on that. When I take her off of puppy food I will find another alternative that may be healthier. Thanks again! |
Science Diet has way more billers and grains than Blue Buffalo does. However, if she was treated for Giardia a month ago and she is still have issues, even with a negative stool sample, it may well still be the Giardia in her system. Giardia is very hard on the intestines and many times will create scarring. It is almost impossible to completely get rid of and once they've had it, they are much more susceptible to it returning, especially with stress. I would start her on a quality probiotic supplement to help her tummy get healthy (yogurt isn't enough). |
