Sam-e with milk thistle There are so many products and online sites - I'm looking for a milk thistle and/or sam-e liquid med for my Morkie who has a portosystemic shunt that was operated on about 3 weeks. Vet has a sam-e product that they use however it runs around $35-40mo. So I figured I would price comparison. Btw she is doing fantastic! Just finished her amox, still on lactulose and vet wants her to start on a milk thistle or sam-e since her liver is only 1/4 of the size it is supposed to be. Help! please :animal-pa |

You can find the supplements you mentioned (Denosyl and Marin, plus another Vetri-dmg which is good) at entirelypets.com much cheaper than the vets. There is another recommended supplement hepato support from somewhere else (can't remember). Two of the members very knowledgeable about liver disease, diet and support are Ellie May, and Ladymom, and many others can help as well. I'm sure they will be advising you soon. |
Welcome to YT. :) This is where I get my girl's SAMe: Denosyl | Denosyl for Dogs & Cats They give you some money off if you buy 3 or 6 at a time. Just use the search function at the top right of their site. This one is Denosyl. There is a newer product out called Denestra which I will be going to soon. It is SAMe just the same as Denosyl...just a different manufacturer. I think because entirelypets has such a good deal on it, I can get it for half of what I get Denosyl. Then there is Vetri DMG. Most vets haven't heard of it yet. It's a liquid and you can gie it with food. It is said to be the precursor to SAMe. It may be worth a look: HomeVet Online Store I think this is where most of our members get it, but it is also available on entirelypets. As for milk thistle, there are a couple different options. A lot of people like Hepatosupport because it has some really good vitamins for liver compromised dogs. If you want a product tht you don't have to add anything to, this is the one I'd get. Others like Marin. The problem with this is that for severely liver compromised dogs, the small amount of yeast and liver it contains is not good. Or you can go to your local vitamin store and get a bottle of milk thistle. It would be dosed on weight and should be given at least 3 times a day. You would also need to give vitamin e though (which you should be doing anyway). Does that help? |
Thank you both MauiGirl and Ellie May - your infomation is a huge help. I do have a couple of questions though, why did you decide that you will be changing from the Denosyl to Denestra for your pup? I'm trying to decide which one I should go with. As far as the Hepato Support, looks like I should definitely go with that since it contains the milk thistle ingredient. I'm looking forward to continuing my Nelli on the long road to recovery. :animal-pa Thanks Again... |
The switch has to do with financial reasons only. It does the same thing, but is much cheaper at entirelypets. I love Denosyl/Nutramax and I do not want to switch, but I don't want to waste money either. |
Understandable :) Thanks for your help |
