What do you recommend? So I live in a REALLY small town that has one yorkie breeder that I am looking into. I was just wondering (since the biggest store here is walmart) if there were any good dog foods there so I wouldn't have to travel to Utah as much or have it shipped. Its fine if there's no good food, having a healthy dog is more important than shipping fee's. I was looking at Iams Proactive Health: Small & Toy 1 Plus Years Premium Dog Food. And if that's not good what would you recommend? Thanks in advance. Sorry for my stupidity:p |

Eh, personally, I definitely wouldn't recommend Iams. I'd recommend Wellness, Innova, Merrick, Natural Balance, Blue Buffalo, etc. But mainly, look for NO by-products, corn, or soy in the dog food. Those are all controversial fillers. You can Google those food brands I mentioned above (or others) and find their website, then find a "Where to Buy" button or option, type in your zip code and find the closest stores to you that sell the food. The only food I'd recommend from Wal-Mart is called Maxximum or something along those lines, but not every Walmart carries it. It's not the greatest but for Walmart, it's the best you're going to find. |
Some breeders that i know feed pedigree and it can be bought at most wal-mart stores they tell me they have no problems with feeding it |
Anything you find at Walmart isn't going to be a high quality food. Iams, Pedigree, Beneful, etc. I would check out Pet Food Supplies Dog Cat Bird ... PetFoodDirect.com. I've never purchased from them, but I know they have coupons all the time, so you can sign up for their mailing list. (email) Food I'd recommend are Orijen, Innova EVO & Wellness CORE. If there is a PETCO near your area, I believe they are now carrying Wellness products. Hope that helps. :) |
Welcome to YT! :welcome4: |
I buy Mazee's food from Merricks. They have free shipping, which is a great deal, but if you can find it at a store (which I finally did-over an hour away) it is cheaper there than at their website. Do you have any feed stores around, sometimes they will sell the better dog foods...also go to the merrick web site and you can put in your zip code and it will tell you who sells their food. hope this helps! :) |
Thank you everyone! The only petco or petsmart is is 300 miles away. I look into merricks, that brand sounds familair, I wonder if the feed store carries it? I will have to go check out my feed store. I need some blu kote for my chinchillas anyway :) |
Most Walmarts have stopped carrying Maxximum but I think some still have it. Walmart also carries Newman's Own dog food. If you have a Tractor Supply store nearby, they carry Blue Buffalo and Taste of the Wild. Also, small feed stores can carry some good dog foods. If you want to, you can also buy your food online. Shipping seems a little high though. Still worth checking out. I think you can also order from Petco or Petsmart online and get the food delivered. |
I buy my dog food (Science Diet) at Runnings...I live in a place (southwest MN) where there are no Petsmart, Petco, petstores for at least 90 miles. I'm not sure what kind of store Runnings is...they sell a lot of do-it-yourself stuff like plumbing, yard, hardware, hunting stuff, horse stuff, lawn stuff, dog stuff, etc...I use Science Diet because the vet recommended it. My vet clinic also sells dog food, so you may want to check there is your vet is nearby. Good luck! |
I've been ordering my dogfood from here www.k9cuisine.com. They have FREE shipping on orders over $50. They have great customer service and they ship orders right away. My other suggestion would be to check local feed/ag stores. Many of them carry some of the better foods. |
I buy my dogs Chicken Soup For the Dog Lovers soul at a Country Feed Supply Store. I have seen free shipping if you spend more than $50. That may be a good option as you could buy all your supplies at once. |
I also live in a town where the biggest store is a Walmart. I recomend you read the sticky post titled Dog Food Grading System, I was feeding Hiro the Iam's but from reading that sticky learned it has a grade of D. I printed the list out and went to my local Tractor Supply where I found four of the grade A+. Hiro loves his Royal Canin for Yorkies. If all else fails, you can try some of the home made recipes listed. This site (YT) is a God-send for any and all information on everything yorkie! |

Wow! I just went to both websites and compared prices on NV's Instinct (the largest bag). K9Cuisine does not have it on sale right now, but when it is on sale, I'm saving about $20 off the price of petfooddirect - AND that's assuming I had a 20% off coupon for them. |

If I'm looking at the correct food, (Hill's Science Diet Puppy Growth Small Bites ), the first three ingredients are Ground Whole Grain Corn, Chicken By-Product Meal, Soybean Meal- all of which you should avoid when choosing a food. If you're looking for a premium food, I'd recommend trying Orijen, Innova EVO, or Wellness CORE. |

I went on a search for dog food 3 yrs ago and again 5 months ago when Lexie came home.... I looked into what each ingredient is exactly. There are many that have corn, by products, many times a dogs allergies are due to the food he is fed, even with a good food like natures varierty my dogs had reverse sneezing, when I changed them to Innova, they were ok. After a while on it, Zander was tired of it, so we have done ... California naturals , wellness, and back to California naturals. Lexie was fed chicken soup for the puppy soul, I am in the process of switching her to California natural :) ... good luck. |

I switched to Royal Canin |
My small town feed & grain store carries Wellness...and it's cheaper there than in the Petco, a few towns over. Wellness Small Breed is an excellent kibble. I feed it dry in the morning and mix it with a tiny bit of their 95% meat canned food for her evening meal. My Zoey loves it and is prospering on it. :) |
Thanks everyone for posting! I think I learned more in the few minutes it took for me to read this than i ever will learn.:D I'll be stopping by my feed store with that list some time this week. |
