| Buddy's new vet/his thoughts on innocualtions Buddy met with his new vet this am, muzzled. He was shaking so bad I felt so sorry for him. He was very stressed and not the time to be meeting a new vet. Once muzzled he layed down and appeared calmer, so was I. He thanked me for the forwarning of his possible snapping at him, which of course he did. He stated that some owners only laugh as their dog goes after him and never warm him. He's been bitten several times and that could have been avoided if he had known. He was wonderful in explaining how he felt regarding innoculating and what each one was for and how long each is known to stay in the blood stream. Of course each dog is different however from research he is following the guides of the AAHA which is why I choose him as Buds new vet. Looking over Bud's last years exam and seeing all the shots he got, everything in the book too, he said which is why he got sick suspecting the Lepto is the one that really made him sick. I asked him if the Lepto was necessary and he stated in his opinion it is the only one he would recommend, since this does not stay in the dog's system after a year. He has seen several cases over the last couple of years and since this can be transmitted to humans it is not something to play around with. He stopped giving it for years, didn't think it was necessary but new studies have come out, he gave me these studies to read, and now he is giving this shot again. This shot is the one that can make a dog have flu like sympthoms for a couple of days then it passes. He has no knowledge of any dog, yorkie or otherwise dying from this shot but has seen dogs die of lepto. It is the owner's descretion wheather or not to give the shot to their pet. He said it is available and dosen't want a dog to come in with lepto when he could have prevented it. Understandable to me. I have to read the material then I probably will get it for Buddy. Since this desease comes from infected urine of wild animals and we live basically in the woods I see no need to take chances. So the results were: (Core shots) distemper/parvo every 3 yrs, rabies every 3 yrs, no bordatella unless being boarded, did you know that the bordatella shot also has parvo in it? Lyme's I wanted. He also had a biopsy on a small lump which turned out to be a spestic(s) cyst. It's ok. Heartworm test and lymes test, I have to call back for the results. Had to get to work. He weighed in at 16.3lbs. Yippppeeeeeeeeee we lost 2ozs I was very inpressed with him. He came highly recommended and I am thankful I changed. I found out that even PetCo dosen't give all the shots in one visit. Oh he asked me to open his mouth because Bud gave him a growl and when he looked at his teeth he was very impressed! Wow he said, what are you doing. He also said he never saw such a muscular Yorkie. He said he was handsome too. I know lepto get's everyone upset but perhaps these new studies will explain it. I have to read about it and see. $288.10 later Buddy is fine. Another year gone by and I have learned so much from all of you this year. I thank you for your expertise regarding innoculations. |

| Good information know! Jackson had DHLPP for his 2nd round of shots and had a bad reaction to the Lepto shot so I'd be terrified to give it again even though we live in a wooded area with 90 acres of farmland behind us. I'm just too scared to have him go through that again. And Jackson's a big boy as well at 14lbs.

Donating YT 10K Club Member | Carol...I know other people who live out in the woods or in farm areas...and their dogs all get lepto because of where they live. I think it has to be considered on a case by case need. I'm glad you've found a vet you like...

| Im glad you found a great vet and Buddy's visit went well. Chachi and Jewels both get the lepto shot because the vet said there were cases of it reported in this area. They have never had any kind of reaction to it

I totally agree with that Deb, also Lymes which is why I asked for him to get that shot. I should have also said he recommended this one also but left it up to me to decide. I was so releived to know Buddy did not have to get all the shots again this year. Had I returned to my other vet he would have gotten all of them without even asking me. I hope he get's current with his thinking because he really is a good vet. | |
