| Finally Home I picked up Trixie this morning from the vets office. She got spayed yesterday and it was the first time she had been away from me for more than 24 hours. She looks like she is in some pain or at least uncomfortable. But that is understandable. The vet wasn't there when I picked her up and the lady that brought her out really didn't know a whole lot. So... how long do I have to keep her quiet? How can I prevent her from licking and biting the wound and stitches? When can I take her for a walk? When can I give her a bath (she smells horrible, like blood and urine)? |

| Yoda had his neuter done on monday....They told me 10 days of no running, jumping, hard playing, no stairs. As for the bath not for 2 weeks, but they told me to use baby wipes, get them wet with warm water and squeeze them out and do a clean up that way. I used onesies on him to keep him from licking the stiches. They also sent home pain pills for him. I kept him in a baby play pen if I could not keep my eye on him ( like when doing house work and such ) Good luck!

| My vet said no baths for 2 weeks also. My dogs didnt lick their stitches but I had shirts I could put on them if they did. Other than that I just kept them somewhat confined and didnt allow them to jump.

| my boy was neutered last week. i didnt see stiches maybe they were on the inside i've heard of that. he did lick a little bit but not to where i was concerned. i think the bigest thing for him was wearing the e-collor they gave me. he hated it and i ended up taking it off. other than that he was fine. wagging his tail and getting into everything. he hasnt been outside though except for going potty. i know he misses it but he has 1 more week to go. i gave him a wash up yesterday with a cloth to get rid of the smell. so i would wash her up and keep her inside the house.

| Pain Killers??? Thanks for all the advice. I just called the vet office to check on everything. I was a little upset because they did not give me ANY instructions when I picked her up. They had me pay, one of the girls walked up with Trixie, I asked her a question that she could not answer and asked her if I needed to know anything else and she said no. So I walked out, not thinking because I was toooooo happy Trixie was in my arms again. But when I got home I started getting upset. So I called the office. They told me that should not have happened and apologized and gave me all the info. The only thing I forgot to ask is about painkillers... Did your vet send you home with painkillers??? |

| Mmmm, I'm not sure what to do... The vets office is closed. Trixie doesn't seem to be in pain right now, but I just picked her up a few hours ago. The earliest I could get to a vet is Monday if I would need painkillers... |

| If she doesnt seem to be in pain I wouldnt worry about it. I know there are other people on here that didnt get pain medication. My dogs also had teeth pulled and one of my dogs was in visable pain.

| Cowboy was neutered 11 days ago and had 3 teeth extracted. They did not give him any pain meds. He didn't act like he was having any pain. I did keep him from running, jumping and any rough play for 10 days. It was hard but he did really good. The vet told me that if he needed it i could give him a baby aspirin split in fours and then split one of the fourths in half(he only weighed 2.8 lbs.).But he did fine and is running and playing.

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | poor Baby - we were sent home with painkillers - Cheri hardly needed anything the next day but I know in a pinch - my vet has told me use Johnsons Baby Asprin - you can try 1/4 and then maybe another 1/4 in a few hours if she's still hurting ...and no bath for 14 days - I think Cheri had one after 12 - but you can use a wipe on her to try to get rid of the odor - but not on or near the stitches - Are they disolving stitches ? I can't believe they didn't give you some printed instructions - I found this and it has GREAT POST Surgical instructions - http://www.snap-nc.org/Discharge.PDF then here is this Post Operative Care The following will help answer the most common questions that arise after these operations. PAIN: An animal's pain threshold is much higher than a human's. Therefore, animals do not exhibit as much discomfort following surgery. LICKING AT INCISION: Animals will often lick at the site of the incision. This is usually due to itching caused by being closely shaven. Occasionally it can be a result of irritation from the suture material. You can be supplied with a bitter tasting cream that can be applied directly to the incision if licking becomes a problem. A bandage can be applied over the incision of females if the cream does not help. An Elizabethan ("cone") collar can also be used if needed. BLEEDING: A small amount of sepage will occasionally occur at the incision site. This happens because of blood pooling under the skin. When the animal moves, a drop or two will discharge through the sutures. If bleeding is excessive or continues for more than 12 hours, please notify us. INCISION SITE: Occasionally a hard lump will appear at the site of the incision. This is often due to the body reacting to the suture material or can be a result of blood pooling under the skin. If it gets noticeably large, please call. When the external sutures are removed, the lump quickly disappears RESPONSE TO ANESTHETIC: Each animal recovers from the anesthetic at a different rate. Some animals are back to normal within 24 hours while others may take as long as 3-4 days to recuperate. Your pet will not be discharged from the hospital if he/she is unable to walk out. However, some animals may still stagger slightly upon release. We feel that your pet will recover from surgery faster if the convalescent time is spent at home. FEEDING: Do not feed your pet for at least three (3) hours after returning home. Food for the first 24 hours should be limited to 1/4 the normal amount. During the second day, offer normal amounts of food at the accustomed times. Excitement and overfeeding can cause vomiting. MISCELLANEOUS: All external sutures will be removed in ten (10) days. Cat castrations do not require a suture appointment. Notify the Center if any of the following occur: Vomiting after 24 hours Diarrhea Refusal to eat after 48 hours. Severe pain Any evidence of bleeding Continuous licking or pulling at the sutures |

| That is great information!!! Thanks for sharing. I wish the vet had given me that! Trixie seems to be doing well. She's a little quiet and mopy. But when I take her out to go potty, she's her old self. It's hard to keep her from running in the grass, she's all over the place. She's been eating fine, drinking a lot, and playing with her toys. Once in a while she'll jump a little or get a twitch and wants to lick her belly. So far, so good!! My landlord is calling us the two invalids , I had a knee surgery done two weeks ago, so I'm still kind of limping. |
