Brushing teeth! Well, I found some of Rocky's teeth a bit dirty, mostly the back ones. So I ran out and got him tooth paste and a small brush, also a small finger brush. But this is so hard to do, he is jerking every time I try to apply the brush. How do you guys do it? Also how often should I do it? Is 3 times a week enough? Thanks! |
I have this issue as well its never ends pretty I also was told by my Vet it was time for her to do a cleaning but I am not too thrilled about putting my lil one under anesthesia |
I brush Teddi's teeth every night! I started as soon as I found out that yorkies were prone to tooth problems. I bought a peanut butter-flavored toothpaste (sorry-- forgot the brand name) and a toothbrush "for puppies" (it has a wide handle area so it's easier to keep the mouth open; it's not a finger brush). The first time I brushed his teeth, I first let him lick the toothpaste so he would get comfortable being close to the toothbrush. Then (I think-- I don't quite remember! :scratchhe) I pretty much just held his mouth open and gently brushed his teeth. His tongue was all over the place! I had to do some maneuvering to get to his teeth! :p At first he would run away when he saw me with the brush but not anymore... I guess he got used to it! You gotta be careful though... Their teeth can be sharp! :teeth: |
THanks. I will keep doing it every day till he gets used to it. He means everything to me so we'll get it done! Thanks! All the best to all the little ones out there!! |
Yep, just start slowly. That's what worked for us. The first few times, I just let Missy lick the toothpaste off. She all on her own started taking the brush into her mouth to kinda chew on it. This is when I would start gently brushing. I would only do it for a short while to start, now she whines for me to brush her teeth every night after I do mine. :D |

HAHa....Monkey dogs!! I love em!:D |
I try to do them 3 x a week but with Hot Rod's surgery I am not even going to attempt his. He's not crazy about it but he'll let me do it. Haven't really been able to get to the back teeth though. Maggie squirms alot but knows that I will win so she does relent after a bit. |
I don't quite remember how Pao got used to it but I know I started him when he was a pup because after I joined YT, I read about all the Yorkie teeth problem and that freaked me out. I buy the poultry flavour ones and he likes to lick them at first and then I just brush. |
Thor's teeth are awful. He had a teeth cleaning a few months ago and I can already see plaque forming again. I used to wrap Thor up in a towel and have at him with the brush. Needless to say, he was not a fan. A few weeks ago, I took a page from LilMissy's book and decided to go slower. Right now I just use the tip of my pinky and rub the toothpaste on his teeth and gums. Once he gets completely used to it, I plan to switch back to the brush. I can tell this is more effective because his breath immediately got much better. Every night I brush and floss my own teeth, and then I do Thor's. :) |
My two are tough customers too. I've tried almost everything, but I think I'm going to have to schedule them for a real tooth cleaning appt. Even though I try to be conscientious about brushing their teeth, it doesn't seem to make a big difference. Maybe I'm just expecting too much in too short of a time? I'm really kicking myself b/c a few months ago I was at a dog show and happened to be talking to a man I ran into with a dog who'd taken an award the day before and one thing I really noticed was his dog's teeth were SPARKLING white! I didn't think to ask him how he got them so white til later on and by then it was too late:(. |
