I used to give Cheerios and 100% Natural Salmon Snacks (dehydrated wild pacific salmon sticks) with no additives/preservatives by Snack 21 Changing the way you "treat" your pet!! (Canadian) but it's gotten more dry and hard to the point where I was afraid it might irritate my girl's throat for swallowing it without chewing. I also gave up on Grandma Lucy's Organic Baked Blueberry biscuit treats. They turned stale quick.

Then I started on the NRG Pet Products Smart Nutritional Research Group Ltd dehydrated pet food dehydrated dog food "Dehydrated with 100% Pure Canadian Rockie Mountain Air" Salmon Trixx Bitz (Ingredients: 100% human grade wild salmon, cider vinegar, herbs and spices) but I really did not feel comfortable with their "12 secret herbs and spices" (is that even legal???) and not sure if that's what triggered a series of itchy scratchiness so I'm ready to toss the rest of the bag out (which is most of it). I also fed something that resembled bird feed (with flax seed & molasses) and couldn't stand the acidic yeasty "aroma" so I stopped that, though my girl liked it just fine.

Now I've settled on a couple I like, and my girl absolutely loves to no end. The new flavour of Organic Buffalo Mini's with Blueberries (small soft/chewy treats in bone shape) Wild Bites™ - nutritious, healthy and natural dog treats and cat treats. Love at first bite!. I'm going to pick up the Venison & Cranberry next! I give her that along with Products : PureBites.com which even tempts me with its aroma (can you tell I'm a fan of liver? ) but am still too nervous to try something packaged for non-human consumption even if the only ingredient listed is pure liver. It was especially great when over the weekend, I went by PetSmart and came upon a coupon scan/sale where you get $5 off of $10+ purchase. They sold this there, so I stocked on another bag which was $9.99 at another chain store I originally bought from but was marked at $10.57 (or some odd number like that) at PetSmart so it just made it for the coupon deal! That costed me $5.5x for the one bag! I was tempted to buy more but was too lazy to go through the hassle of multiple $10/$5 transactions just to get the deal since it wasn't an auto $5 off of every $10 increment.

Thank goodness for these b/c potty training only became 100% when I started using Wellness Pure Rewards Venison Jerky Treats (grainfree) and I cannot rave enough that Snickers will do ANYTHING for these. Also about a month ago when Snick graduated from puppy class the other dogs in his class almost took me down when I opened the container of jerky! He LOVES THEM! They are not the cheapest but has all great ingredients, no JUNK. I cut each square into 4's so the bag lasts LONG. As an in between meal biscuit I use Natural Balance Spotato/Venison (also grainfree) for small breeds...he likes these too.

Smiles--

We give Buster pieces of kibble for treats, but it's differently flavored from his normal kibble (i.e., his normal kibble is made with duck, and his treats are made with lamb)--and both foods are high quality. They taste different enough for the "treat kibble" for him to think it's special, and we don't feel guilty about giving it to him because we know it's healthy for him.

Also, they're perfectly sized.

Hehe, that's what I did when I was feeding my girl Orijen 6-fish as the main course and gave her NB's LID Duck & Potato small bites as the "treat" and she loved it then. But as I started being extremely generous in her "treat" portion and intake, she probably caught on. Eventually, I just gave it to her as part of her free-fed kibble while the Orijen (she doesn't really like, but will eat a bit of) is hand-fed during playtime with her daddy. She prefers the NB the rest of the time, of course. And now she won't be fooled by the NB as a "treat" . I did it like that originally to ensure that she ate enough of a proper meal each day. I tried to keep the NB duck & potato as a treat by getting her another flavour regular bite of NB to mix in with Orijen. She did not like the NB Vegetarian formula at all.

Since she doesn't eat blueberries, bananas, carrots, any vegetables I've tried so far, straight up, I like getting her treats with blueberries mixed/processed in as that's the only way she'd take it.

Mine love Canidae Snap Biscuits and Wellness WellBars (Yogurt, Apple and Banana flavor). I alternate these with fresh carrots and fruit. Also Old Mother Hubbards assorted mini biscuits.

I'm just starting to use Cheerios as a treat for potty training. How many do you give them each time? One, a couple, etc.??

I would just give Joey one; it seemed enough. You're not trying to quench the appetite, but just say "good job." During his early grooming sessions, we used at least 10 of them, but only one at a time. Remember, you can also use them for teaching them basic commands such as sit, lie down, drop it, and come.

Thanks! That's what I figured.

I want to try to work with him tonight to learn to sit. Since he's our first, I'm learning as I go!

Teaching to sit is one of the easiest tricks if you have a few tips, start by using a small piece of food to lure your dog's nose to point upward (toward the treat) and move the treat backwards over his head so that he naturally lowers his haunches to a sitting position.

Many trainers also believe you should teach a dog to sit and stay before you put the food bowl down, if they don't stay, you pick up the bowl, and repeat this until they stay. I'm not sure what age they can learn that part, Joey was old enough when we taught him and it was one trial learning. Some trainers think this is important to learn because it shows the dog that you are the alpha or pack leader, and they get their food from you, but must obey you. This website shows different tricks you can teach your dog, and the proper way to do it. It's really fun, and those little cheerios work great for this training because the don't ruin the appetite. Dog Tricks! Shake, Crawl, Beg, Kiss, Roll Over, Bow, and more!

I'm not sure if anyone had seen an e-mail going around on baby carrots. The article said the reason they turn white after being in the refrigerator is due to the fact they are dipped in bleach. I'm not sure about the organic but if anyone buy's baby carrots may want to check into it more.

Baby carrots are actually dipped in chlorine to keep them from turning what markets call, "WHITE BLUSHING". When they turn white because of bacterial oxidation, they can no longer be sold and are hence thrown away. So, in order to keep the shelf life of the carrot longer, they dip them in the chlorine which kills the bacteria and stops the White Blushing. Yummy
I personally, eat organic, and so do my babies!
