My Yorkie won't eat dog food :( My 2 yr old Yorkie is the pickiest eater, he will eat Puperonis. I have tried just about every dog food on the market, dry & wet, on occasion he will eat a helping like Ceasers or nibble on a dry food. But then he will just ignore it to the point of throwing up from not eating. Feeling sorry for him I will resort to human food. Chicken & rice & then he gets diarea, then I swear nothing but dog food from now on then he won't eat It's a vicous cycle. Any ideas on what to try next? |
Have you tried mixing the food with cheese or cottage cheese or yogurt |

I agree. My furbaby was the same way only not as bad as yours sounds. She's a very picky eater but if she got hungry enough, she would eventually eat the dry kibble. I never tried canned with her though because I'm not a fan of it. I've recently started mixing her morning meal with some yogurt and her evening meal with some cottage cheese, shredded carrots and a small amount of shredded cheese. Since I've started, shes been eating all of her meals whole within 15 minutes. Every dog is different though so this may or may not work for your furbaby. |
Welcome to YT!!! You DO have a problem there!!! Pupperoni's are so very fattening and don't contain all the good things that your Yorkie needs. Try adding a little lowfat cottage cheese with some kibble. Also make sure the kibble you use is small enough for your Yorkie to chew. There are some great foods out there that have very SMALL bites. Good Luck.... and keep trying. |
Have you considered raw? I started raw when Bailey was about 5-6 mos. and I couldn't get her to eat anything but treats. (i was also very concerned about dog food recalls). I have a recipie of lean hamburger, turkey, rice, eggs, cottage cheese, salmon, and vetetables, etc. Its no trouble at all. I make up a batch and freeze about 2-4 weeks worth at a time in little tupperwares. Each tupperware holds enough food for three days in the fridge. There are a lot of pros to the raw diet - small non smelly once-a-day poops, no bad breath, no dentals. Its something to consider. I can't think of any cons. Good luck!! |
Karrie, Would you be willing to share your recipe?? It sounds ideal! Thanks! |
I had the same problem with my first yorkie. He was the pickiest eater and basically I fed him the treats that he liked because he ate nothing else. As he got older he got very over weight but to me he just looked cuter. He started getting skin allergies and would be put on predizone. Then he would get little sores and have to be put on antibiotics. Then he developed pancreitis and was very sick. Then he got bladder stones, then bladder cancer and had to be put to sleep at 13 years old. I didn't discover YT until after Chip was gone. I can't believe how ignorant I was about everything. I now have a new baby and she only gets the best kibble and never has had a treat and she is 10 months old. Her training treat is a piece of her kibble. So don't give in to your babies wants when you know that treat isn't good for them. Down the road you'll regret it. |
ooops! posted twice |
I do give treats to Suzi, however not all the time and everyday. She does not live off of them. I agree that you ought to try mixing her kibble with cottage cheese . Soemthing has to work for her. She is 2yrs old, and all she eated is PuP-Peroni? I Have given Suzi those that are the lean Recipe . That is a vicious cycle with your little one . I know that I have to keep to Suz's diet otherwise she won't eat her kibble very well either. I've mixed her canned food in with the kibble and she eats better. The canned is by the same company as her kibble :) |
you should try Mixables... Little bella loves these in her food and they are pretty good for them. They are like 75 cents at petsmart and one package lasts about a week for me. I just add a little bit over her food and she always eats every bite:) She is a VERY finicky eater... Mixables come in a whole bunch of different flavors. Bella's personal favorite is Greek Banquet:) |
Boy do i know what u are talking about. Molly is terrible eater. She is 1 yr old an i`m still trying to find something she likes. Right now she is on royal canin so far so good. She did like beef that i cook for her . But now thats not any good now. So i finally an just letting her have dried food. Don`t know if that good or not but when this bag of dog food is gone i think i will put her on evo. Its got meat in it. Molly doen`t get treats very often. I bought her some kundo`s an she gets them once in a while. But good luck .wish there wa simple answer but i haven`t found one. |
Leila is a picky eater as well... I give her a little yogurt(1/2 a teaspoon) mixed into her dry food and she gobbles it up! I prefer the Stonyfield Yorgurt cause it's organic. Leila 's the Strawberry flavor! Just make sure not go get yogurt with sugar subistutes in it. goodluck: :tinyheart: Melissa and :animal-pa:Leila |
I feed Dry Natural Balance to Milo he loves it what he loves more is the Roll it is a complete food. They sell little mini versions at Petco so you can try the different flavors. It is worth a shot. |
i just recently got my reese and his previous owner said he was a picky eater and would only eat ceasers. what a horrible food i thought! i started feeding him merricks dog food and he eats it no problem. no nasty poo with the food change either. merricks is all natural and he seems to love it! |
Picky Eater Seems as if alot of Yorkies have this picky eating problem! Mine is 7 months old and some days she eats just fine, other days, not so good. I just stick to her dry food and sometimes mix a little broth or just enough gravey to flavor but not too much so the dry food get soft. Some days she gobbles it up, other days - well, we just hope for the best. But she is doing good and vet says she is healthy. Good Luck! |
