| Protein content in grain free foods for puppies We have visited a local Farm & Pet store and they carry several of the grain free foods (Innova EVO, Nature's Variety, The Taste of the Wild). We are switching our adult maltese/poodle to a grain free because she is constantly itching & licking herself. We have samples of all of the foods mentioned above. Anyway, our yorkie pups are 8 weeks old and we are currently feeding Royal Canin. We'd like to switch them to grain free as well (we are considering the EVO & Instinct). I've read on dogfoodanalysis that because of the high protein content it might only be good for adults. Is it okay to feed puppies either of these? Should we wait until they are a bit older? |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Instinct is labeled as all life stages - so you'd be fine w/ that one, but you may want to stay away from Rabbit (for their raw, they get the rabbit from China). Innova EVO has pretty much the same analysis as Instinct, so I'd be comfortable feeding that as well. Both of those are 42% protein - and I actually like that %. The TOTW is lower - in the 30s - so if you want something more midrange, perhaps go w/ that one? Often on the DFA site, they're referring to larger breeds with that higher protein/calcium comment.

| I have both girls on Wellness Core grain free DaisiMae is 10 mo. and Chelsea is almost 2 yrs. Chelsea wouldn't eat dog food just home cooking, but I decide to try Wellness Core and they both like it. It is 33% protein the only thing is that Chelsea has put weight on which she doesn’t need. I mix a tablespoon of Core wet food with the kibbles. Unfortunately, Chelsea sucks all the wet food off and DaisiMae eat the kibbles. At nite if the food is still there Chelsea will eat the sucked kibbles…

| Thank you both for the replies. I can't find Wellness anywhere local and I really need to be able to get it local. I guess I don't get why one food is so much higher in the protein content than another. How does the protein % affect a dog? What is considered the best %, the higher ones or lower ones? |

I had my pup on TOTW and he gained 2.5 pounds in 6 weeks. I honestly believe he gained too much weight to fast. I have read on here that puppies can never be to fat and that maybe the truth however Tucker is too big for his small frame. He filled out quicker then he grew up. I put him on a lower protein food. My 2 bigger dogs did ok on TOTW, thier coats have never looked so good, but my little poodle also gained some weight and she has been the same size since she was 5 months old. Not all dogs do well on higher protien foods. You may have to try a variety of foods to find the one that works best. Good luck!!

| Merrick Another option is Merrick's Before Grain, which comes in kibble or canned. The dry kibble comes in Buffalo, Chicken, or Salmon, and is suitable for all life stages, like all of Merrick's dog food. |

| Thank you for sharing your experience with the high protein foods. Our adult maltipoo doesn't need to gain any weight...she is 7.5 lbs and the vet said that is the perfect weight for her. Our yorkie pups are gaining nicely on the Royal Canin, but are having trouble with itching. I just don't know what to try for our pups. We just started introducing the Innova EVO to our maltipoo, changing it slowly. I've already noticed a difference in her poo...it's much larger than it was. She was on Pedigree (I now know it's not a good choice, but we didn't know better when we first got her. ). I noticed the protein content in it is very low compared to the Innova or Nature's Variety. I don't think the store we went to carried Merrick's before grain. I'll have to check into that. |

| I just bought a bag of Innova EVO yesterday... Put 6-7 pieces of that in with his old kibble, and he dove right in. Picked out all the Innova EVO pieces, wouldn't touch any of his old food, then looked up at me like, "hey, gimme more of that good stuff!!!" LOL, how do you switch a dog over gradually if he's going to be like that? :-) Lauren & Nikko |
