Keeping your dog alive: Tried herbs?

Hi all,

I'm so glad I found this forum.

I have a 16 year Yorkie mix (found him as a young puppy), and I've pulled my Mister back from the brink of death several times, much to the vet's surprise. They had written him off a few times. Once with his teeth infected, he had compromised kidney... almost renal failure. I gave him a pinch or two of astragalus in a dropper over a two week period and his creatinine levels went from 75 to 25. I have followed various veterinarian herbologists advice on how to administer that herb (an old chinese herb widely used there), as well as other herbs.

Today , I continue giving him a mixture of astragalus, pinch of siberian ginseng, vitamin ester c and a B-complex twice a day (in a dropper). This is because b vitamins is good for kidneys, and he's recently caught the cold and will help avoid pneumonia.

I want to let everyone here know that there are some things you can do for your yorkie alive and healthy. It's good start to early, but honestly, my dog was in bad shape three years ago with his teeth infection (teeth and kidneys are very connected!). I had all of his teeth removed for about $1,000 (he wouldn't let anyone brush them!).

Now, i mix his soft food at about one third protein, one third veg's, and one third good carbs (rice). Be careful of phosphorous content as you would any kidney diet -- and make sure that ash is low or nonexistent! My dog, raised with cats, spent a lot of time sneaking cat food! Don't let your yorkie eat it.

Astragalus, a root also known for as an immune booster, congestive heart remedy and antitumor/cancer capacity, is good for humans too! It's been widely researched, and the chinese put it in their chicken soup for millennium.

Well those are tips i've learned along the way with my yorkie (i think he's part terrier?) Anyways, for those of you who have a sick dog, know that with a little research and love, you can keep your doggy alive.

take good care......dee

Welcome to YT we are a great group to belong to! Have not tried herbs except garlic.... My Pom poo was stung by a bee did not know but he was mildly alergic. Long story short he ended up with a systemic staff infection much like MRSA. Suffered with staff for over 1 year more eruptions much like puss pockets. Over couse of year and tons of money and biopsies lots of antibiotics, Surgeries to remove masses etc. I swear tried them all (meds)even steriods. 3 Months ago switched all my furbabies to Natural Balance Sweet Potato and Fish eliminated all antibiotics started adding garlic to their turkey and brown rice w green beans and carrots. Now he has not had a single eruption and is staff infection free. Oh also started making my own yogurt for pups too. My guess is that this herb astralagus may have helped too? Sorry so long winded . Anyone else have thoughts on homeopathy or naturopathics?

Does garlic work for yorkies?

Does the garlic work for your yorkie? If so, how much do you give him. Yes, I think the astragalus, vit c, and b vitamins have been a good help for him. I'm interested to know what other vitamins/herbs that the group uses. I'm going to try your recipe for success~! ..... Dee

herbs/vitamins

Well I googled herbs and vitamins and came across quite a few submissions from vets on herbs, like echinacea and goldenseal in extreme cases (goldenseal is for respiratory infection but can only be taken two weeks). In their suggestion for weight and size, i came up with my own "recipe" for my six pound yorkie mix (for herbs, about an eighth to a 1/4 of a tsp daily)...

i normally sprinkle about 1/4 of a tsp. of astragalus on one of his daily meals.

When Mister is sick -- i put about an eighth or tenth of a cup of water, mix in two ester c's 1,000 mg, two vitamin B complex, two echinacea caps. I let the mixture sit a few hours until totally dissolved (heat kills vitamins). Then i put about two or three cc's from a baby dropper twice in his mouth (he doesn't like it) once a day.

Otherwise, just on a weekly basis, I give him just the vitamin c, vitamin b and astragalus a few times a week. I give him his regular senior doggy vitamin daily, I break it up into his food (which, because he's so picky, he get a different meal everyday LOL!

Well that's pretty much the regiment he's been on for years now. Hope this helps. I also buy astragalus powder bulk from Clark's health food store in Loma Linda, California. Maybe you can call and order the bag, it's only $5.00 and it will last you for a year!

herbs/vitamins yorkie

I started giving Mister herbs about eight or nine years ago. I brought him to the vet who said he had pneumonia. That vet told me to give Mister vit c in his food, and echinacea, which i thought was very unusual (most doctors scoff at herbs).

I myself had been taking herbs and vitamins for years, but never thought of giving it to my pet.

About a year later, Mister was coughing up mucous, i thought he might have pneumonia again, but the vet said that it was heart problems this time, fluid around the heart, so he gave Mister a shot of lacex (just like humans) and Mister started peeing everywhere... it relieved the fluid around his heart and he was fine. Now, I watch him, a few times I have given him hawthorn berry (which, on occasion i also use myself). It is a mild diuretic and has been used in european countries for over 100 years. I really haven't had to use it much since the astragalus tho...

I'm giving this information to the group because I see a lot of sick pets here and my Mister is old, but I've found some wonderful alternatives medicines to keep him healthy. I started with a little bit, maybe an eighth of a teaspoon of the herb for a couple of days to how he would react. Vitamin C is good and harmless... So in all, herbs and vitamins when he's needed it for about eight years now...

Also, I did a lot of research and these herbs have been used by other vets. Google and you'll find extensive references. I wouldn't dream of giving my pet anything that I haven't ingested myself. Sometimes, if Mister can't breathe (cold), I'll give him one CC (about 1/4 tsp) of Children's allergy and cold medicine and a dab of vicks on his little nose.

This is just mommy sense:)

Whooda thought i'd be a mom to Mister :>) ....d.

For anyone who's interested, I also wanted to include a list of herbs NOT to give your pet. Here's a few resources that I've found helpful, some are from vets --

Thank U for sharing all of this Great information ..We have ourselves used some of the remedies on our little Oliver over the years..as we feel the vets with most of the chemicals they offer our little ones make most of them sick over the years..we have through trial and error found ways of controlling coughs..anal gland issues eye infections and ear infections etc...all without the chemicals the vets were reapeatedly giving, as those were actually causing more of these problems looking back...
as u had originally stated ..i also see many of these little ones here are sick and also think it is due to the limited knowledge the vets have on remedies ..seems most vets have knowledge based on product ...
THX again 4 sharing ur insights...

Thanks for the tip. I think I'll try it on by babies, and my family too.

Thanks for sharing... I always wondered about herbal remedies when my Yorkie was sick, but didn't have much luck finding information on it. I'm sure many YT members will find this thread very interesting and hopefully helpful.:)
