| Eating poop... Can i give pineapple? Ok so i am totally FED UP & GROSSED OUT! Zima will not stop eating his poo! I've read that pineapple is really effective so i bought some canned stuff today (coz i HAVE to do something!) but first wanted to check that it's ok to give to a 12week old pup? And should i give him a little piece or put some of the juice on his food? Thanks!!! |

I've heard that it's very effective, just add a little piece to his food, and start with 1/4 of a chunk so that there will be no bad reaction, gradually increase the amount. Some people say with a full-grown dog they've had to use 2 chunks with each meal. I also suggest you free feed with a puppy that age, so that they won't be tempted to eat their poop. You don't have to worry about them eating too much until they are around 8 months, and if you use kibble most dogs will never over eat. Reasons for eating poop are undigested protein in the poop, and the dog smell the protein, and this smells good to him. The pineapple helps to digest the protein, so the poop will no longer smell nutritious to the dog.

| Ok great I'll give this a try, thanks! Yep I'm free feeding, the vet told me to only feed him 3 times a day and gave me a measured amount which i tried for a couple of days but i found he started eating his poo's alot more and he hovered around his bowl all the time and it made me feel awful, like i was starving him!!! So back to free feeding, i know he's not being a pig though as he doesn't eat EVERYTHING in his bowl everytime, just the amount he needs if you get what i mean!!! Thanks for the advice ill try give some tonight! |

| Im def more comfortable with the free feeding, that way i know he's getting exactly what he needs, i do keep my eye on him though and If he was taking advantage or just eating WAY too much i would cut down but so far he's being good! I just gave him the pineapple so we'll see how he goes! I personally would have thought poo tasted/smelt bad enough without the pineapple but hey, what would i know!? I'm only a silly human after all! hahaha |

| Actually, I never put mine in their food, I gave it to them as a treat twice a day. |

They say that a dog's noses smells so much differently than humans. When there is a pot of beef stew cooking we smell the beef stew or the blend of ingredients. Dogs on the other hand, smell each individual ingredient. So that's why the poop doesn't smell bad to them, they smell undigested protein, and that smells good. The pineapple contains enzymes that help digest the protein, so that the poop no longer smells appetizing or nutritious.

I do it as a 'treat' as well, only I found that for Turk I had to give him 3 pieces a day. Also, I buy the frozen Dole chunks from the freezer section. I just thaw them in a baggy(in the fridge) as needed. This way I know that he's not getting extra added sugar and preservatives. 100% pure pineapple.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | You must have seen Cesar's show, and I'm not sure where he got this information or if it's indeed correct. He said it was due to a potassium deficiency and bananas have potassium, it's interesting to note that pineapples have a good deal of potassium as well. From what I've read there are several reasons for the poop eating behavior to occur, and it doesn't really sound like anyone knows a way to stop it in all dogs. I would be interested to know if someone has success with the bananas because on his show he was also using a technique of positive reinforcement, and if the potassium theory held true, he would not have needed to use the positive reinforcement. So, this puzzles me.

I tried tablets for a month. Unfortunately, they didn't work on my lil guy. I gave the unused portion to my mom so she could try them on her little poo eater. lol

| I too have a poo eater I have tried the tablets for less than a week and so far they are not working. I will go get some pineapple, and then bananas if that doesn't work. Ughhh, it is just so gross. Agnes is the sweetest, femine little lady ever and then she just chows down on her poopie Soo nasty, I can't ever let her kiss me and I don't dare kiss her. It is sad really
