| new yorkie owner with food question I picked up Bob (Bobby) from the rescue yesterday. He's a 5 year-old yorkie, 5 lbs., who was used as a stud by a breeder, but apparently stopped doing his "job" (tough work, if you can find it...), and he ended up in foster care with a rescue organization. He won't eat dry food for me. His foster mom said he was eating the same middle-of-the-line venison and rice kibble that she fed all her foster dogs, and so I stopped and picked up a bag (good quality). The pet store also gave me about a dozen sample bags of other kibbles, but Bob is showing no interest in any of them. Do I just leave it out and wait for him to come around? My last dog (a mini-dachshund) was the same way--and in the end, she won. She would only eat the best wet food that money could buy. I don't want the little guy to be hungry, and I know he is...but I also don't want there to be any question about who's training who at this early stage. Input, please!! Thank you, ademas |

| You can try to mix and gradually feed only dry food. Also there is a food (very cute with vegetables) that you can wet it before serving...Mojo really liked it! Ohh, and what about gravy? maybe you can give it a try...

| He is probably a bit frightened right now, I would really try to stick with the dry food, but maybe (just in the beginning) you can mix some wet in it..

| You've probably already done this, but have you tried sitting him in front of his plate between your knees and hand-feeding him one bite at a time to see if he'll start on his own then? Just a suggestion... Spoil 'em rotten I say!

| Natural Balance is affordable and has a wet texture to it. That is known to be a good one for a mature dog like yours. Other ideas is using dry food and mixing in cottage cheese or scrambled egg. They love it!

| I would slowly ween him off of the wet food. He might not even know that he's supposed to be eating the other stuff if he is only used to eating wet food. I like the idea of hand feeding also. That's what we had to do with Brody for the first week or so when we got him.

| They say a dog will not starve itself but I know how hard it is when you wnat them to eat. The suggestions here are all good but kibble is the best thing for his teeth so if you feed wet food, I would only do it once a day or mix it with the kibble as a compromise. |
