Overeating? 1 Attachment(s) So just before I explain my concerns I would just like to put out there that my little baby Dolce is my first dog ever. I have never had to actually raise one for myself, only puppy-sat for relatives. Soooo, I'm very cautious and concerned about the little things, as any mommy would be! Ok so my little guy is 10 1/2 months old and is eating like a horse! We give him the recommended amount that is suggested. 1 cup daily (I believe it is) since he is still a little tyke. Before, he never even use to finish his food, and now he can't stop eating! We feed him Science Diet's Puppy Lamb and Rice Meal which is a new food we just started (he has been eating this brand for about a month now). I'm just trying to figure out if he is always wanting to eat and seems to never be full because he likes the food so much better, is jut a normal growing dog, or if he has a health problem I should be concerned about. I know that dogs will always eat even if they are not hungry, but this is not normal for him and that's why I am concerned. He is already a bigger Yorkie naturally, weighing in at a whopping 8lbs 8oz, but he is not overweight is very active and very healthy. I don't want him to get overweight 1)because it's a lot worse for a dog to be overweight than a human and 2)with his bigger size I don't know if the health risks would be greater. if anybody has any input i would greatly appreciate it :) - a first time concerned Yorkie mommy |
I am a new yorkie owner myself, and my baby girl Fiona, will be 8 months old on the 29th, and she just got spayed yesterday, and weighed 11lbs! can you belive that!? I would really tell you to break up feeding for him.....i used to work as a vet tech, and we were always told to feed puppies 3 times a day, little in the am, middle of the day, and at night...however, i usually just feed fiona twice a day...maybe you should just give him 3/4 c in the am and then little bit more at night? see if that helps!? |
I would switch to a better food. I know vets recommend things like science diet and Purina but they shouldn't it isn't good food. Here is a web site you can go to and read about different dog foods. Dog Food Reviews - Main Index - Powered by ReviewPost That being said I would give him a few small meals over the day. It could be a phase. Or she might not be getting enough nutrition so is over eating. |
Did the overeating start when you switched to the Science Diet? It could be that he just really like it or it isn't filling him up. Science Diet isn't a great food. I would switch. Overeating, especially if not gaining weight, could be related to a medical issue like pancreatic insufficiency but you might want to switch foods if you think that is what's causing it... |
