microvascular dysplasia?? Our puppy is 10 weeks old now. 2 days ago she woke up and started seizuring, foaming at the mouth, and face twitching. We gave her the nutrical b/c we thought it was a sugar attack. The problems persisted. All the while she was eating fine. She would be playing and being her normal self and then she would start chopping with her mouth, and her face would twitch. We took her to the vet and he sent us off with low sugar prognosis. They continued. We checked her into the emergency vet clinic after a bad seizure. They have had her for 2 days now. They did an xray of her liver and some blood work. The vet seems to think it's microvascular dyplasia, or PSS (shunt), or a Hydroencephalas. They have her on valume and a dextrose drip. We have no idea what to do. We want our baby to live a normal life and are wondering if any of your yorkies live with this. Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated. Chad |

My kodie has microvascular dyplasia (MVD)... from what your saying... If that is MVD your baby need to be treated ASAP. Kodie doesnt have any signs of MVD at this point of his life. Where do you live? If it was possible I would take your baby right to Cornell University. They have a liver specialist there and are VERY knowledgable. It also cuts out a lot of wasting time and money at local vets that do not have the technology to help you. It sounds like something is REALLY wrong... I wouldnt mess around.. and I would find answers now! Some signs of MVD are wandering around, head pressing, temporary blindness, loss or response, inappetence, stumbling, seizures, straining to urinate. Bile Acide levels raised. Have you had a bile acid test done? |
Thanks, We live in Southwest Louisiana. We have been doing research on the internet for about 15 hours now. Although MVD has not been diagnosed yet, that is what they think it is. Again, right now she is at a pet emergency clinic where they do not have the capabilities to do the liver function test. We are gonna get that done tomorrow morning. The ONLY symptom she has are seizures. And this JUST started 2 days ago. That's what makes is so weird. My wife and I have printed a list of every known disease that dogs can get that causes siezures and are researching each of them. About 240. We are doing whatever we can to help out. Like i said, tomorrow we will know more after a couple of tests. Thanks for your prayers. We go and see little baby Icee in her little "room". When she heard our voices she tried to stand and be happy for us, but the valume prevented her from that. She had 3 seizures while we were there, so im a bit worried. You should see her, poor baby, she kinda stretches out and runs in place lying down, she pees a little and opens her mouth very wide. I about lost it, my wife did. I don't know how much longer I can hold it together, I have the hardest time being strong for my wife when this hurts me just as much. When we come into the house, Icee is usually running with her tail wagging to greet us and give us kisses. We both walked in today and about had a fit. I really hope we can resolve this problem and bring her back to normal. Chad |
Chad my heart goes out to you, your wife and the little angel. Her seizures sound absolutely horrible. I don't know anything about MVD so am of no help whatsoever. I did have a maltese who was born with epilepsy and had seizures all the time but not the type you are describing. He lived to age 13. We will keep you in our prayers. |
I'm so sorry your baby is sick. I know how disheartening it is when they are sick and you want to help them and you can't. My prayers go out to you and your little baby and I do hope with all of my heart that it can be resolved very quickly. I don't have any knowledge or experience with this disease or with seizures so I cannot give you any advice. I wish I could. God bless you all. |
Thank you all so much. We are going up there tonight to see her again. They just have her on valume, which i don't understand. Phenobarbital is the most common medicine for seizures when you don't know what's causing them. Im really not sure why they haven't used this. They are saying everytime they pick her up, she seizures. Poor baby, i know she misses us and it sucks that we can't be there the whole time Chad |
Chad - What an awful thing to have happening to your baby. I feel for you, your family and of course your baby. I will include you all in my prayers that you may find a cure or at the very least a treatment that will allow her to have a normal life. Please know that we willing be thinking of you. Pull through little girl, pull through. |
I am so sorry to hear about your little one...I don't have any information for you but please keep us updated on how she is doing....I will be thinking about her and prayers for the doctors who are helping her as well as your family!!! |
Im so sorry that your little one is so ill. I will have you all in my thoughts and prayers. Please keep us posted. |
I am so sorry about your fur baby Icee. Please don't think that you have to be the strong one for your wife. I am sure she understand how much this hurts you too. Both of you are there for Icee and my heart goes out to all of you. |
My Mia has just been dignosed with MVD. We went through all of the blood test and bile acid test which showed abnormal liver functions. The vet actually thought it was a liver shunt. He said we needed to take her to Texas A & M and have an ultrasound done. We did that, but it showed nothing. They decided at A & M that we needed to do a liver biopsy to check for MVD and while they were in there doing the biopsy they could look around for a shunt that the ultrasound may have missed. She did great through the surgery and we were able to bring her home a couple of days later. Took about a week to get the pathology report back on the biopsy, but it did come back with a dignosis of MVD. They put her on the Hill's L/D food and it has made such a differnce in her. If your baby has MVD she can not tolerate protein. In the beginning I was giving the Nutracal too, but that was the worse thing I could do because it is full of protein. Little did I know at the time that the protein was the problem. You stated that they have your baby on Valume. Just double check with your vet about that, because they told me that most pain medicine was a no-no for dogs with MVD because it was to hard on the liver. I know what you are going threw, I was in your shoes a month ago. MVD is not as scary as it sounds. Mia seems totaly normal now just from simply changing her diet. As my vet put it to me, the only thing Mia needs to put in her mouth is L/D and water. That means no treats and no people food. Here is a very informative site about liver shunt, MVD and other liver problems that affect Yorkies. http://livershunt.com/ |

Thank you all for your thoughts, prayers, and advice. It's very comforting. I would like to go to the vet tomorrow and they say MVD and changer her diet. There is nothing worse than coming into our door of our house. I never thought the attatchment to our puppy could be ............this much. She has become a part of the family very very quickly. I really really really hope that she pulls through. Every time i think of her alone in that kinnel bed, which she hates, i almost bust out. Heh, well when it rains and pours. We are a young married couple and have all the usual financial dealings and trying to get on our feet, and today is my wife's birthday...............sooooooooo We will take it as it comes. We don't drink or anything like that, but a good bottle of vodka seems like a good thing right now. (sorry for all the venting) heh, it feels good though. that's all for now..... I will keep you guys updated. Tomorrow will be a big day for baby Icee and us. chad |
