VERY concerned about Cosequin ....well...I WAS about to re-order the Cosequin ~ BUT I have decided to STOP using it as I am very, very concerned and I am NOT happy  I don't know how I missed it, but they put Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) in as an ingredient  I am sooooooooooooo MAD!!!! I stay clear away from SLS and I can not believe it has creeped into the Cosequin    Dangers of Sodium Lauryl Sulfate Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS ) | Effects of sodium lauryl sulfate |
Oooh jeeze then what is there to give them? Can the amount be so small that it won't be problematic? |

Yup, that is an ingredient in Cosequin. Not happy with it but it still has the most research backing the product and Ellie's vet has never had a problem with it. Glycoflex is supposed to be okay and I have heard good things about SynoviG3 but we are staying with Cosequin until I see side effects or I get really concerned about the ingredients because I really like Nutromaxx. |
This scares me.... Although SLES is somewhat less irritating than Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, it cannot be metabolised by the liver and its effects are therefore much longer-lasting. |
Well i'm glad i didn't buy it now!! |
I really, really do not understand why they need to put SLS in their product :( |
Oh no!!!! I'm using this!!! This really up sets me. Thank you for posting this. I'm taking Gracie in tomorrow for blood work and will bring this up with my vet. Thanks again!!! |
This does look like quite a nasty ingredient but now I'm forced to weigh that because most of these glucosamine products do not work. Ellie's LP cannot worsen and she can't get arthritis because she can't have NSAIDs. I am going to look into this ingredient a little bit deeper and if I don't like what I see, I might switch to something (who knows what). The vet did recommend Glycoflex. Maybe we should email Nutramaxx about this? I have come to believe that nothing is 100% safe and when we switch to something, a few months later it will be on the bad list. |

I am going to look back at the SynoviG3 Allergy formula. ...It is really is so upsetting, as there is NO NEED for SLS to be in this product :( |
Oh, dear! Lady has done so well on Cosequin, too. Glycoflex didn't really help that much, but I saw an amazing difference with Cosequin. She was able to get off steroids when she started taking Cosequin. I guess I'll have to research SLS. I'd never even heard of it. |

She has done amazingly well on Cosequin. She has terrible arthritis in one hip and shoulder. There were times when it flared up that I had to walk her in a sling she was in so much pain. She runs since she has been getting Cosequin! |
oh dear..i just bought 4 more bottles...gosh..it never ends.. |
Yep, SLS is not good at all, but check your (human) shampoo bottles and your soaps...I guarantee if you use ANY store bought shampoos or soaps, SLS is listed as an ingredient. |

Off to look at Glycoflex... |

I can't figure out why they would even put SLS in it. From what I understand, SLS is for cleaning and making shampoos foam.  |
I use Platinum Performance products- Platinum Performance Complete Joint. Canine CJ I started my golden on the regular Platinum a year ago (without the extra joint support of the PP Complete Joint) and her regular right-hind limping completely quit. She is now on the PP Complete Joint. Platinum and Cosequin are the only products I trust, due to their solid research and testing, and their excellent customer support (including vets and nutritionists). The use of SLS is really scary, and if I used the product, I sure would be calling and raising a fuss about this. |
i looked at the ingredients in Platinum Performance™ CJ Canine Wellness Formula + Complete Joint (CJ and i did not see SLS. DO YOU THINK THIS ONE IS BETTER THAN COSEQUIN? I HAVE SAMMY ON COSEQUIN AND WAS ABOUT TO REORDER, BUT SEEING THIS I AM CONFUSED. |

The CJ is in the base of the regular Wellness formula which is a base of fatty and amino acids, but the joint support agents are actually used in conjunction with other ingredients to optimize benefit. Glucosamine Sulfate 525mg Methylsulfonylmethane (OptiMSM™) 305mg Boswellia serrata Extract 30mg Cetyl Myristoleate 10mg Hyaluronic Acid 10mg I have used these products on my extremely high-level performance horses and can't beleive the difference they make. I know horses are different than dogs, but it has certainly made me believe in the product. |
My vet recommended CosaminDS for Squirt's arthritis. I started him last March, and what a noticeable improvement. He's got his youth back. |
I was just looking around Google and I see that the capsules do contain this but I don't see it as an ingredient in the chewables. The chewables do have garlic though, so I would not use them. Dasuquin (new Cosequin-type concoction) doesn't have this either. Then I was thinking maybe this is used to make the capsules...not the Cosequin itself. It seems that sodium lauryl sulfate can increase absorbtion of ingredients or something like that when the med is in a capsule form. It evidently can also be an ingredient in the capsule itself which most of our dogs don't swallow. So I am going to email Nutramax and ask. |

Also contains Gelatin, soy protein isolate, natural chicken flavor, natural tuna flavor, gum resin, water, tea, mixed tocopherols, magnesium stearate, titanium dioxide, silicon dioxide, natural and artificial flavoring, sodium lauryl sulfate, FD&C Yellow #5, FD&C Blue #1 ...maybe it is the capsule??? |
Grrr, I looked right over that in the Dasuquin. I have emailed them and will post when I find something out. |
Now I'm worried, I've been giving my almost 20 year old cat Cosequin for the past 2 to 3 months already. I have seen improvements in her and i would hate to no give it to her anymore. |
Crystal, Thank you for taking the time to contact us. A minute amount of sodium lauryl sulfate is used in the manufacturing of the pharmaceutical grade hard gelatin capsules by the capsule manufacturer to keep the capsule shells from becoming brittle and cracking during the filling process and shipment of the product. Desiccant packets are placed in the Cosequin bottles to absorb moisture, which keeps the product fresh and extends shelf life to assure a fully active product. Without sodium lauryl sulfate, the gelatin capsule would become brittle from moisture loss and lead to broken and cracked capsules in the bottle. As a "sprinkle capsule", the contents can be emptied from the gelatin capsule onto the pet's food, and the empty capsule shell discarded. If you have any questions, please contact Customer Service at 1-888-886-6442. We are here Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm EST. I think we are sticking with it. :) |
