Whats the best dry foods? I just recently purchased Royal Canine for Yorkies and my pooch loves it, but I wonder if anyone else feeds this brand of food to their dogs and if so, how is it going?? |
I used to feed it to mine a long time ago but one of mine got the itchies because of the corn in it so I switched. |
Joey's is almost two, and I have been using it since he was a puppy, first the puppy food, and now the special Yorkshire Terrier Mix. Joey was really fussy when he was a puppy and sometimes would go 24 hours without eating if he didn't like his food. This is the only one that he really liked; I tried about 8 different kinds even going to specialty stores. He's doing really well on it, his teeth are in great shape, and I like the fact that it comes in small bite size pieces and I use these for training. Most of Joey's meals are given during training sessions. Dog's that are sensitive to corn have been known to developed itching problems from RC, so be on the look out for this, but so far Joey has shown no allergic reactions. |
As Chachi said, Royal Canin can cause the itchies. Any food can but this one is particularly bad. There are better foods, so I would keep looking.:) |
I haven't seen her itching yet...I used to feed her Eukanuba, but she just wasn't eating it...I heard of Science Diet. Have you tried that or heard anything? |
Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lovers Soul is what my pups eat...along with Zoe, Peppee & Zeus when I am not looking |

I use Innova dry for mine and they both love it. So far no problems and I have been using it about 4 months now. Betty |

We use the Life's Abundance kibble. It is all human grade ingredients delivered fresh right to our door. There are lots of good pet foods out there but always read the labels. You will want to make sure there is no corn, no wheat or soy, and no by-products. I personally wouldn't feed any food/treats from China either. Corn has no nutritional value and is a known allergen as well as the wheat and soy. By-products are the parts of animals that aren't fit for consumption:thumbdown. This can include the beaks, feet and feathers from chickens; blood, hair and diseased, dead or drugged animals collected from vet offices, which means your baby would possibly be eating other euthanized pets! |
I fed mine the RC YT and it made Trixie itch and gave her severe digestive upset...to the point of bloody diarreah and severe dehydration that required a trip to the after hours vet. And it was very sudden. (And she can eat just about anything without problems.) I have heard several reports of it doing the same to other dogs, but at the same time I've heard rave reviews from those who love it. I guess it just depends on how YOUR dog reacts to it. |
Have found the below listed site to be very helpful in choosing the correct food for your dog. Whole Dog Journal is an unbiased journal that addresses a lot of different problems. Every February they post the dog foods they approve of. They do not take money from any company and are therefore unbiased and give very good advice. I feed Life's Abundance to all my dogs and new puppies. They really love it and are doing great on it. I really like the results I'm seeing in their skin, coat, teeth, and over all health. |
We are transitioning Harley to Merrick Puppy Plate kibble. We did try RC because our vet sells/recommends it and because I was very impressed that they had a Yorkie Puppy formula. Harley loved it, but after 3 days of 1/16 of a cup mixed in with his other food he a horrible upset tummy and did not want to eat at all. We are working the Merrick in very slowly, but he is doing great so far. The store that I purchased from (which is a speciality store) actullay ended up being cheaper than purchasing RC from the vet also! Just like with skinbabies, what your furbaby eats is more determined by them than what you may want! Jeri and Harley |
i have been using royal canine for 6 years and my yorkie has never had a problem on it. his teeth are great and he has a really shiny long coat but like everything else i am sure it is not for all dogs.:aimeeyork |
