| Spay questions Maggie is scheduled for her spay operation on Aug 11th...I wasn't nervous but now I'm anxious... They said she might be able to come home with me in the afternoon but can stay overnight too. Does anyone think taking her home same day should be an issue? I hate to think of her sleeping in a strange crate, strange place... Also - what about the anesthesia? How does it affect small dogs? (She's almost 6 lbs)

| If the hospital is staffed 24/7, it is fine to leave her. If everyone leaves at night I would absolutely not leave her. Most small dogs do fine if the right kind of anesthesia is used. This would be Isoflurane or Sevoflurane to maintain and usually something else to induce (like Propofol).

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Roxie needs to get spayed next month and the vet said they want her to stay overnight. I told her no way since no one is there at night and I will stay up all night with her and I can get her to the er vet in 7 minutes if needed. She said if she feels she is ok to go home the same day I can take her but I have to sign a waiver. If she thinks she isn't ready to go home she wants her to stay. I told her if she isn't ready then I will take her to the 24 hour er hospital for an overnight stay. There is no way I am leaving her overnight alone. What if something happened no one is there.

Donating YT 10K Club Member | I've had lots of animals neutered. None stayed overnight. Usually they sleep most of that first evening. Make sure you get some pain killer to take home. By 8 at night I was told to give one and the next morning...I more or less waited to see how they felt before giving another.

| I had Izzy spayed about a month ago. Everything went great, excepted she loved trying to clean her stitches, so we had to buy premie onesies for her to wear for a bout a week (until she got her stitches out) All went well. We had done the blood work 2 weeks before since she got her teeth cleaned (and pulled). i also did get the pain meds. I can't remember the name but will check when i get home if i still have them. She only could take 1/2 a pill a day since she's about 3.5 lbs. I did take her home as soon as i could since i knew no one would be there over night. She was actually hopping around in her onesie and we went on a walk the next day. she was sleeping and relaxed a lot the night i got her back.. pretty sluggish since she was still waking up from the anes. but she was a trooper!! I would def reccomend the onesies tho!! the premie ones fit her perfectly at 3.5 lbs.. you could probably get away with the premie ones maybe the new born ones!!! good luck! i'm sure it'll go just great!!

| I have had all 5 of mine spayed and did NOT leave them overnight...if no one is there, i would rather them be home with me. My vet even offered to take them home with him so he could keep any eye on them. I opted to bring them home and they all did just fine. They slept most of the time and i kept them in a small Sherpa crate so they couldn't move around much. It also protected them from the other sisters. I would just carry the crate with me from room to room the next day and take them out of pp and put them back in. This is for their protection too so they don't jump the first day. This is day 2 for Meiah's spay this past Tuesday. She is doing great and feels almost back to normal. I only gave her the Medicam (pain meds) y'day and last night. They do bounce back quickly. You will also want to make sure they don't lick their incision. I put on a large fufu shirt to cover her so she can't get to it. Many buy the premie onsies from the baby stores and put on their babies to keep them from licking. Good luck!! |

| This is such good info - I'm taking notes!! LOL - I'm trying to picture the onsie on Maggie - I assume you have to make a couple of alterations for the tail and so she's able to pee? I'm planning my next trip to Target!!

My little Shadow Donating YT Member | The onsies are cute, but you shouldn't have to do any alterations. The ones I got have 3 snaps @bottom. Just keep the middle one unsnapped & the tail goes in the middle. Good Luck!

| Actually, izzy has basically no tail, so the onesie didn't bother her at all, i crate her so she knows not to pee when she's in there, and she's good at telling me when she has to go, so we got into the routine of we'd go outside, she'd wait for me to un do the onesie and i'd roll it up some so she wouldn't potty on it she'd run and go and i'd buttton it back up once we go inside. she did have a few accidents, so i bought 4.. i got mine at walmart, they were granimals brand, fun colors and very cute!! i forgot to look at the meds, but i wanna say it was Rimedyl. i can check the doseage later on and post.. don't worry she'll be fine. you can ask the vet to give you calls once she's outta surgery and once she wakes up.

| What if I don't get her spayed? My yorkie weighs 2 lbs and is 5 months old. My vet recommended getting her spayed at 6 months old. If she is not spayed, will she go into heat?

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Yes she will go into heat. Roxie went into heat 3 days before her surgery was scheduled for. She was 8 months, then she went into a false pregnancy. I really wish I could of gotten her spayed before her heat. It really is best for their health to get them spayed. They can have health issues from not being spayed.
