Puppies and what to eat My puppies turned 3 weeks on Friday weights are 11oz, 2 that are 15oz and another that is 17oz are those good weights? How much do they gain a week? What is a good food to start them on, and should I start them now or at 4 weeks? When should they be wormed I have not seen anything but momma keeps them very clean if they have worms would momma have them too because I have not seen any in her stool? Thanks for any and all help, Christina |
It sounds like you have healthy weights, no worries about them being too small. The best idea is to weigh them regularly and take notes so you will know right away if one stops gaining. You can put the puppy food you are going to feed in the blender and grind it into a powder and mix it with goats milk or water, warm, to get them started eating something of substance. They are ready to be dewormed starting at two weeks. At this age you can use Pyrantel, get the dosage from your vet. Always assume the puppies have worms because if you wait until you see them it's a bigger problem to deal with. Remember to deworm Mom at the same time. There are several good foods and everyone has a preference. I use Royal Canin. |
I have some just born puppie milk would it hurt to mix it in with the puppie food. |
:confused:What kind of royal canin do you use....I was looking at the dog rating sticky and some of the royal canin foods were as low as 3 star. I thought they were supposed to be excellent. They have the same rating as the Diamond Dog Foods??? |

The super premium foods can cause the bones to grow faster but not the muscle. When the bones grow too fast the muscle and cartilage can't hold the joints in proper alignment. If this continues until the growth plates close the damage is permanent. ("The Puppy Puzzle" Bob & Pat Hastings) I haven't had a nutrition related problem since I started using Royal Canin. Having a breeding program that is in balance and experiencing very few problems is something I feel very fortunate to have. While I respect the reviewers, I'm not willing to risk something that works. |
