| Giardia I don't know if anyone has dealt with this but our little Tag has it. He started showing symptoms 9 days after we brought him home. The vet Gave him a shot and put him on three days worth of antibiotics. I couldn't read the label so I'm not sure what it was. We administered it according to the vet's directions and all was well for a couple of weks. Then the bloody stools started up again and we returned to the vet with Tag. He prescribed 10 days worth of Flagyl which Tag completed. Yesterday we started back with blood tinged stools and the vet is out of town. Tag is back on the Flagyl. I'm just wondering if anyone else has any ideas or experience here ? |

Luv my 7 Furkids Donating Member | One of mine came to me with severe giardia. We had him on antibiotics on and off for almost the first year. He still has issues with ibs, and now he has severe alergies. I almost wonder if being on so many antibiotics for so long made his imune system weak. Good luck and keep going to the vet until your rid of it. Have you notified your breeder? |

| Hi! If I remember correctly, Wylie's Mom has experience with this, as one of her dogs had it twice. I will PM her this message for you! Quote:

| Thank you both, yes I did notify the breeder and she chose only to treat the litter. I've read online that she should treat all her dogs and disinfect her kennel. Any thoughts on that ? |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Yep, my Marcel had it twice as a puppy. It can re-infect SUPER easy bc during treatment, giardia "cysts" are being shed all over the pup's environment - so you have to disinfect everywhere, as best you can - to prevent reinfection. Often for reinfections, they'll be put on Amoxicillin and Metro or, instead of the Metro, sometimes Panacur, which also shows effectiveness against giardia. But, the key is to clean the environment with bleach water.

| Sorry you are dealing with this. Giardia is very hard to treat and may never truly go away, but lay dormant until a stressor causing a relapse. Unfortunately, my Sissy has had it twice. They can contract it from many sources. Bird droppings are the main contaminant and they can be found all over the place. Even dried, powder-like bird droppings contain it and they blow everywhere!!!!!! Standing water of any kind is the worst culprit, though walking on the sidewalk and then licking paws can be just as bad. Everything your pup has come in contact with needs to be disinfected. It is also a good idea to wipe his bum with baby wipes after each potty to help make sure spores don't stay in contact with his coat. We eventually trained Sissy on pee pads and her outside time is extremely limited and when coming back inside, feet pads, belly and face area are wiped with baby wipes. We also started her on a quality yogurt (I use either Stoneyfield Organic or Dannon Naturals) daily as her breakfast. This has tremendously helped as well and is highly endorsed by our vet. Metronidazole was the only med that worked for her. It was in a liquid form that she took for 14 days. Make sure your pup continues to eat as anorexia is a common side-effect of Giardia. Especially since he is still very young. Please keep nutrical on hand. Good luck & PM me if I can help at all.

| Great advice thanks so much. I have been using baby wipes and none of my other beasties have been affected. I'm hoping that is a good indication that 'm disinfecting properly. I will start the yogurt and talk to the vet about a possible medication change on Thurdsday when he gets back. Tag is eating well and in no distress. He is maintaing a healthy weight so far. I was gone for a week and am wondering if that stressed him. He didn't appear to be stressed when I got home but you never know. |
