help my yorkie won't eat I bought my girlfriend a yorkie a few months ago and we absolutely love him. but we started feeding him eukanuba and he ate really well for the first few months. but my girlfriends mom started feeding him alot of scraps even though we told her not to she would still do it behind our backs. so he started eating less and less of his dry food. So we tried giving him wet food which he ate a few times but he doesn't even eat that now. Through out the day he will eat some of his dry food but never a whole bowls worth. any advice will be greatly appreciated. thanks |
Welcome to YT! Scooter wouldn't eat when I first brought him home, and he's tiny, so hypoglycemia set in quickly. Because of this I was feeding him wet food mixed with water through a syringe every 3-4 hours for the first couple days. Soon after he started eating the wet on his own, but I'd have to be near his bowl and put some on my fingers so he could lick it up. Then we started crunching up his dry and putting it in the wet, increasing the amount of dry little more every 3-4 days. Now he's still on mixed wet-dry, but not very much wet left! If your furbaby is tiny, you HAVE to make sure he's getting food so that he doesn't become hypoglycemic. Otherwise, I'd be FIRM (no other food) and keep nutri-cal or something similar on hand just in case. He won't starve himself, so eventually he should start eating. I've heard before it's ok to 'stimulate' their appetite by putting a little cheese or yogurt on top of their kibble so that they'll eat, and slowly wean them off it. Hopefully you can figure something out! Just make sure he's getting enough nutrients to stay healthy until he's eating all on his own! Good luck! |
I sure hope your little one starts eating. But I agree if he isn't a tiny go ahead and be firm with him. He will eat when he gets hungry enough. Giving scraps of the table really hurts there eating food that is good for them. I would keep you furbaby from your mother's house till she learns to listen to instruchions. Yorkies are different than other dogs. |
You've had the pup for several months? And now is turning down good food for "people" food? yep, that happens! lol Be tough. No more table scraps. Pancreatitis is scary, expensive and can be deadly. Search on here for stories about it. Use that as your weapon to get the others in the house to comply. Your pup will eat when he is hungry once he knows the "good stuff" isn't coming. :p If the person who feeds him the people food just can't be stopped, point her in the direction of home cooking instructions. That's great too, but she has to do the research. Once she's done the research, she may decide to do it the right way or at least least realize why she shouldn't do it the way she's doing it now. Good luck! :) Welcome to YT! :D |
