Couging at night (not kennel cough) VERY LONG but advise needed Winston started couging at night starting on Monday. At about midnight he started couging and than he spat up a little spit and than he drank and went to bed. He had gone to the groomer that morning and than had puppy classes that night. We just figured he may have inhaled some hairs or something so we weren't that concerned. During the day on Tuesday when we were at work he puked a little bit (nothing much puked up) and than that night at around midnight again he started his coughing again. This cough has become a nightly routine at around midnight and lasts for about 10 - 15 mins. He is eating, going to the bathroom like normal and still has all of his energy. He doesn't act like anything is wrong. We took him to his vet and he took a chest x-ray of his lungs and heart just in case it was an enlarged heart, but all came out clear. He also ran his fingers up and down Winston's throat to to try to make him cough but nothing happened. Winston fell asleep while the vet was petting his throat LOL. It also not kennel cough as he has is vac. for it (and vet ruled it out). Our vet said not to be worried as most small breeds just have a cough and it's just a way of life. He said when Winston gets neutered he will have a closer look at Winston's throat to rule out everything. Winston is only 4 and some months old, so this means we have to wait for 2 months to completely rule out everything. Sorry, I know this long but I'm concerned about him and I just want to know if anyone can relate to this. Again he is normal (except for the little pukes twice now), just has this cough thing. My vet isn't concerned but hearing from other yorkie parents would help settle me. One thing me and my mom are thinking now is that he may just be doing it for attention at night. You see he sleeps in his kennel beside us and he knows that when he coughs I let him out to get a drink. I think on Monday and Tuesday his cough was legite but now I'm wondering if it's just a habit. Thank you  |
Hi. My little Muffin used to get tonsillitis if she got too cold at night. She would wake up with a cough that wouldn't stop. Initially, she was treated with antibiotics. After that happened, I would catch it as soon as it occurred and give her a little benedryl and it would go away. She had it all of her life. I have no idea, though, if that could be your problem. Just a thought. I don't believe your last paragraph would happen. I can't see a little dog coughing for attention, but I could be wrong. |
