Please Help Us My 14 week old Yorkie won't poop or eat. The Vet says that as long as he isn't vomiting, he should be ok, but I'm still worried. He put him on antibiotics and something to coat his stomach, but he doesn't seem to get any better. He hasn't eaten anything since thursday night. The only bowel movement he has had was one today that was only mucus. Could he have an obstruction? The vet said sometimes their intestines could, "fold over themselves." Has anyone ever had any experience with this?

Have you tried getting a second opinion? No food since Thursday seems like a long time to go without food, but I have heard that Yorkies sometimes 'store' food in their system. At least make sure he is drinking water, you can sometimes add a bit of sugar or honey to entice them to drink more. Have you also tried to take him on a nice long walk to see if he can poop it out? Good luck and welcome to YorkieTalk, hope CJ gets better soon!

I think he's not eating since he hasn't pooped. If walking doesn't do the trick, I would take him in again to the vet or to another vet. He could have some kind of obstruction. Did he eat any of those rawhide thingies? Sometimes those can "gum up the works" if they chew too big of a piece off. It can get stuck in their intestines.

Oh please take your little one to anothe vet for a second opinion and have tests run...That is a pretty long time without food. Try some Nutrical, baby food (especially the baby chicken sticks in the jar by Gerber, they love those!) Don't quit until a vet runs tests... Keep us posted!

My pup loves baby food too -- and you can try hand feeding it. Or some vanilla yogurt, which has sugar and lots of protein. Sometimes if they won't eat on their own they will at least eat if they are handfed. The stomach can sometimes fold over as the vet has described. I'm not sure if it is the same thing as bloat or if that is another malady. Either way, good luck and if you really trust your vet, take your baby back. If he doesn't say anything different or give other treatment options, I would get a second opinion. Has CJ lost weight?

CJ Seems to be improving today! CJ got up several times during the night. It didn't bother me or my husband, we were just happy to see him move. This morning his attitude is much the same as usual. He drank a lot of water, but still doesn't seem interested in his food. We gave him some chicken broth, too. I am supposed to give the vet an update this afternoon. I hope that he continues to improve. He gave his daddy and me quite a scare - we've never seen a dog go down so fast! The loss of his usual happy go lucky bounding attitude is the scariest. Thank you all for your help. My husband said that he had given him a rawhide chew toy the other day - maybe that was it!!

So glad CJ is doing better. THat rawhide could have been the culprit. If he had a big piece in his tummy it would take a while to dissolve and could have just given him a tummy ache. I stopped giving ours rawhides until they got bigger. Got Dingo Munchy Stix instead. THis is ground up rawhide and they can chew to their hearts content without getting a big chunk hung up somewhere. I get mine from www.jbpet.com and get the big box. Way cheaper that way.

What do you mean by rawhides? Is that the same as chew sticks made from rawhide? I give Archie these "twists," which are white sticks, like pencils, made from rawhide. He LOVES to chew on those for hours. Is that the "danger" you are talking about?

Yes that is the ones although I used the Dingo ones that have a red strip of meat in them. I give them to my two yorkies now but quit when they were little as they got a belly ache from them and I had read that the rawhide strips can bind them up if they eat too many or get too big a chunk chewed off. THat's why I went to the Dingo Munch Stix. The Dino brand is better IMO. It is not as greasy as the cheaper ground up sticks. They do love the rawhides though. Waya has a much smaller mouth and waits until Chuhga softens it up and then steals it. I think that older dogs are okay but I watch when they chew down to a small piece. If it gets just small enough they will swallow it and I don't want them to get choked.

Archie really likes his chew sticks and they usually get dirty before they get chewed down small enough because he likes to hide them under the couch and then dust gets on it and I have to throw it away. Is it OK for him to chew the chew sticks before they get really small? I think he really needs to chew on something while teething because without the sticks, he chews on the metal bannister in the living room or the edges of doors, both of which have paint on them. And since I live in a pre-war building, there could be lead paint

Have you tried "Greenies"? They are wonderful (well not that I've tried them myself however) but Schatzie loves them. Healthy, wont bundle up and tie up their intestines when they swallow pieces, etc. All the pet stores carry them now and even a lot of vet offices's do. Yeah, better have a lot of chewy toys around rather than house fixtures or the house..

You should not give your babies rawhide at all, it does not digest and it can cause obstructions in the intestines that can be a big problem. This can cause a dog to quit eating also, if something is obstructing their intestines, or their bowel. If your baby does not start to eat, please ask your vet to do an x-ray or something that will show if there is a problem with his intestines. It is good that he is taking water at least.

I doubt you would have to be concerned about Archie. Seems like he just likes to chew. Ours chews them totally up. They also like Greenies and scarf them down very fast. They are good for their teeth and breath. | |

I do give him greenies on occassion (when I buy them...they're a little expensive), and I have Nylabone at home, too. However, he won't chew the whole thing so usually, I microwave it and cut it up into bite size pieces, and then he likes to chew them.
