adult teeth growing behind baby teeth, already neutered! okay, so i searched YT for "double row of teeth" and found some good threads, but they all said that yorkies get their teeth pulled while getting spayed/neutered... well, Kash is already neutered, and i'm just now having the problem of this double row. it's actually only his two front teeth that are growing in behind his baby teeth. i think all of his bottom front row fell out and are starting to grow in... so my problem is that since Kash has already been neutered, and the vet didn't see a need to pull teeth (i guess becuase he had no sign of adult teeth coming in yet), what do i do now? i don't want him to have to go under anesthesia again. will the baby teeth eventually fall out or will he have a double row forever? what potential problems could this cause? can i make them loose for him somehow? please help! thanks! |
Just give him tons of stuff to chew. It seems that some yorkies can lose baby teeth up until 13 months of age or so. It seems like the smaller they are the longer they seem to retain them according to my vet. You can also play lots of tug with him with a rope toy to help losen some of them up. |
I know yorkies are one of the few breeds whose teeth don't fall out on their own. I just had teddy's teeth taken out.. he was already neutered like your little one, but when he went to the vet in april, the vet saw there were three more teeth to pull out. If you leave them in for too long, it could cause bad breath and such. I know you don't want to, but those teeth might have to go. But I'm no expert, I will wait for other yters to chime in. |
Yeah, they really should be removed. The bad breath is because food builds up, and this can lead to serious gum problems, not only that, but the permanent teeth often come in incorrectly because of lack of space. yorkiecare |
I agree! They need to be removed. Rainbow is now 1 year old and had her 2 retained baby teeth removed only 2 months ago. We had to wait longer than we expected because her blood work was not normal and we had to have it normal before they put her under anesthetic. One of the retained teeth was a canine tooth and the new tooth is not in the proper position since it was in there so long. Thankfully it is looking like it will finally move to the right place, but the longer you wait, the greater the chance of them not growing in straight. Since he has already been nuetered, you should not have any problem with the anesthetic, just a bigger expense. |
I'm glad you posted this as I've been thinking about this as well. Maggy May will be getting spayed here shortly and she has two retained baby teeth that will need to be removed as well if they haven't come out by then. Crossing my fingers they fall out on there own before then, seems like an awful lot to go through with our lil ones after a spay. I mean, the spay itself has to be uncomfortable while they are healing, having teeth pulled as well would probably make them not wanna eat wouldn't it? When they have their teeth pulled, do you give them soft food, (their normal food moistened), or do you give them canned food until they heal all up? |
As long as you trust your vet there shouldnt be a problem with getting them pulled. I had a male years ago who HAD to have a few pulled. He was just fine! It seems to happen quite frequently with the breed. |

This happened to Layla. SHe was spayed and then two months later had teeth removed... i was so upset she had to be put under AGAIN.. but she really did fine.. and she ate her normal food when she came home. She didn't seem bothered by it at all. |

I'm dealing with the same dilema. I had my pup neutered at 5 months because my vet stressed that it needed to be done before 6 months of age and the sooner the better. But I had no idea that these little guys had so much trouble with their teeth. I wish she would have told me to wait 2 months until his adult teeth come in to see if any need to be pulled so he wouldn't have to go under anesthesia twice. I must admit, I feel like I've been scammed a bit. Now he is 7 months old and has lost all of his baby teeth except one of large teeth on the top in front....his adult tooth came down in front of the baby tooth and the baby tooth is not budging! I took him to the vet yesterday and she said it needs to be pulled. Argh! Estimated cost: $325....the neuter was over $400. I am a bit pissed off, I must admit....don't get me wrong, I will do ANYTHING for my baby but I feel it could have been much easier on him and cheaper for me if we had waited to have him neutered. BTW, that baby tooth is mighty sharp!....and food is getting caught between those two teeth. I know I need to do it soon...just wish it would fall out! Hmph! |

Yes, they do have to be anethisized to pull them, but that is what my vet told me that they don't have roots like the permanent teeth do. The teeth themselves are fairly long because they go into the gums |
